Excerpt: Its always interesting to me when a publisher wants to develop a new game off an old franchise / brand / movie that new gamers may have never seen. While a game like Epic Mickey will likely flourish regardless of that stigma, a game based off a single movie thats nearly 25 years old is going to be hamstringed immediately.
Conclusion: I'd be willing to bump this up a little higher if they didn't waste the Top Gun name on this generic but serviceable air combat simulator. The presentation is sloppy and pulls you out of the action inexplicably at times, but there is fun to be had here.
Excerpt: “Top Gun” is one of those timeless movies that are timeless because of the phenomenon itself, and not necessarily because of inherent quality. In other words, it’s probably best described as a cult classic but that being said, it’s still one of my favorites, which is why I was interested to see the latest interactive adaptation.
Excerpt: Also known as IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey in its console guise, Wings of Prey is a new title in the style of the IL-2 canon that brings World War II back to life, yet again. Despite the wealth of first person shooter (FPS) titles crowding the genre, Wings of Prey brings combat flight simulation set in the famous war, boasting six theatres of war including the likes of the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of Britain, amongst others.
Excerpt: Flight combat games have been around almost since the beginning of gaming itself. Today, the genre is well-populated; from the venerable Ace Combat franchise to the recent smash success Snoopy Flying Ace . Top Gun is a PlayStation Network exclusive from Paramount Digital Entertainment and DoubleSix. In this downloadable title, gamers can experience all the excitement of the 1986 Tom Cruise movie without having to put up with all the homoeroticism.
Excerpt: Air combat games for consoles and handhelds are often a hit-or-miss affair. Some games, like Ace Combat, are quite good and bring the thrill of fighter combat across in the game without all the minutiae of hardcore flight combat sims on the PC. Many of the games in the genre leave a lot to be desired, though, and Top Gun for the DS is a prime example.
Pros: Harold Faltermeyer's "Top Gun Anthem" plays in the menu screen
Cons: Ugly graphics with muddy textures and underwhelming explosions, Repetitive, annoying voice work, Mind-numbingly dull and poorly designed gameplay, No discernible control difference between the three aircrafts, No "Danger Zone" from Kenny Loggins
