Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD
11 September 2012
Conclusion: I might be tad nit-picky on a few items, I'll admit. But the few things I mentioned do distract from an otherwise brilliant re-imagining. The fact that Activision/Robomodo were able to add "new" graphically and audibly while keeping in tact all that each THPS fan holds dear is the best factor going for HD. I'm so glad they didn't take it upon themselves to predict what "should" have been done at the Warehouse, or making Venice Beach be at night instead of under the sun.
Excerpt: Player(s): 1 Extra Features: Online Multiplayer (1-2 players), Leaderboards Normally when I think of an HD remake of a game, I think of an older game that has been redone with an HD graphics upgrade or a game that been completely redone with new graphics. Often the games that are released with a new HD graphics coating are basically the same and the games that are released with new graphics can be a hit or a miss based on whether the developer remained faithful to the...
Excerpt: If the original entries of the mega-popular Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series taught players anything about great skateboarding video games, it’s first and foremost that it was possible for them to exist. It accomplished this by adhering to two fundamental principles: A) enticing the player to take huge risks for rewards is an absolute necessity; and B) the more intuitive and seamless the interaction between the player and game, the more empowered they will be to take big...
Summary: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD brings back classic levels from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 and 2 and gives them a much needed graphical upgrade. They play just as well as they did upon original release and fit perfectly with online multiplayer.
Pros: Beautiful HD graphics, New tracks fit perfectly with the already killer soundtrack from the originals., Online multiplayer is fun and works well
Conclusion: The Short Version: You might sneak some enjoyment out of this supposed "Best Of...", but all that will be is a hollow echo of games that were much better, and deserved far better treatment, than this. Like a budget, poorly remastered, unofficial Greatest Hits album that's missing half of the material that should be there, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD trades ruthlessly on nostalgia and leaves you only with disappointment.
Pros: Stripped back gameplay harks back to hardcore roots, Kickingflipping the Warehouse pipe gap still feels great, Superman is on the setlist
Cons: Guerilla Radio isn't, Awful paucity of content - no HORSE or offline multiplayer, Mechanics not as tight as they should be
Conclusion: Bad Religion may not have been thinking of video games when they came up with those lines, but nevertheless they ring true as we return to the origins of the Tony Hawk series. The question hovered in the air, much like Tony Hawk hovers in the midst of performing a 900 high above the ground. How does the pinnacle of the Tony Hawk series hold up ten years after its release? The answer is that it holds up tremendously well.
Pros: + Grand gaming experience + Just as addictive as a PopCap title.
