Excerpt: It’s somewhat fitting that Tiger Woods would win his 72nd PGA tour event a mere 48 hours before his new game hit the shelves, isn’t it? Then again had he won the last two years, I suppose the same thing could be said. Yes, it’s officially spring and a new season of golf beckons. If you’ve purchased every version of this game, it’d be in the teens by now but they do keep making enough improvements so that you’ll keep buying the game year after year.
Summary: If baseball is a game of inches, golf is a game of degrees. The loft of a driver; the slope of a fairway; whether a ball lies above or below your feet; an open or closed club face -- even a few degrees’ variation in any of these respects can significantly alter a shot’s path. Golf is also an expensive game to play. The necessary equipment alone will set you back at least a few hundred dollars, which is to say nothing of concomitant costs such as caddies and carts.
Excerpt: Remember last year how Tiger Woods was not even on the cover of his own game? And the year before he shared the cover for the first time? It kind of felt like Tiger might disappear from the game he made popular. The fact that Ricky Fowler, the Puma-loving Zac Efron of the golf world, now shares this year's cover with Tiger Woods, doesn't mean Tiger is being pushed out. In fact, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 has more Tiger in it than ever.
Pros: Interactive tour through Tiger's entire career, Kinect controls for the first time, Streamlined swing mechanics
Cons: The dry career mode, Continued trend of fewer on-disc courses, Lack of motion-controlled party modes
Summary: Summarizing a game as massive as Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2013 in a couple hundred words is almost impossible, but I will try. Being a couch golfer, this is the best opportunity to live out my PGA fantasies. The courses are expansive and beautiful, breathing life into each club. This is as close to playing TPC Sawgrass as I will ever get and I relish the chance.
Excerpt: Whether you want Tiger 13 largely depends on how much you value the game’s new shot control system, as much of what’s here was available last year, and some of that is a lot more palatable without the new money-grab veneer. If you’re not used to golf games at all, it’s a rough place to learn the ropes, but if you’re in way deep this still may be worth your time.
Summary: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 is an up-and-down affair. On the plus side, it's gorgeous, and still as complete a golf game as there is on the market. On the downside, it can be frustrating to play, and the online currency system that restricts a good deal of content is a slap in the face to longtime players. Also, Kinect at your own peril.
Pros: Refined swing system means the game is a lot more challenging, Graphics are dependably amazing, Career mode is still the game's biggest strength
Cons: Incorporation of Tiger Legacy Challenge feels forced, The game's internal commerce is a sham, Lack of tutorial is a barrier to entry
Conclusion: Concept: The game offers a new swing mechanic, the Tiger Legacy mode, and more, but for better or worse it’s largely the same
Graphics: The good looking greens use a similar 3D grass and field of vision focus as last year’s NCAA game
Sound: As always, Jim Nantz delivers on the golf commentator vibe, but I wish he delivered more context specific to your character
Playability: Visually, the new swing mechanic takes getting used to.
Conclusion: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 - Masters Collector’s Edition is without a doubt the most comprehensive golf title available on consoles. The strong course roster and plethora of game modes will keep even casual sports fans coming back, especially as it is a game that requires little quick thinking. As with other annual sport games, though, it fails to be a “must-have” for those who picked up the 2012 edition.
Summary: EA Sports released Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 at a perfect time, just few hours before the launch of the game, Tiger Woods (cover star of franchise) ended his title drought and won his first tournament in years. This gave the game a much needed extra bit of publicity. This time around EA Sports made many changes (i.e added new gameplay features and modes) to Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 in-order to breath new life into this great golf franchise.
