The King of Fighters XIII

Destructoid
2 September 2013
  • Summary: I fell madly in love with The King of Fighters XII the first time I played it. After slogging through the slow-paced, polygon-based KoF: Maximum Impact games, it was such a relief to see the series return to its roots. The game featured some of the best 2D graphics I'd ever seen, and a fighting system that felt familiar, yet offered plenty of opportunities for discovery and creativity.

The King of Fighters XIII review

GamesRadar
29 June 2012
  • Excerpt: For a lot of us, SNK’s fighting games were usually followed up with a slice of pizza and a romp in the ball pit, mostly because our cheap-o parents weren’t interested in spending thousands on a Neo Geo and games. Jerks. While the SNK of old has dissolved, their fighting games have carried on, getting a little better with every incarnation.
  • Pros: Difficult but rewarding gameplay, Silky smooth animation, Interesting character options
  • Cons: Little variation between game modes, Mindless, rambling dialogue, Extremely unfriendly to beginners

The King of Fighters XIII

Game Over Online
4 March 2012
  • Excerpt: Two years ago, KoF XII hit shelves and thoroughly disappointed long-time fans of the series. It wasn’t a bad game in the traditional sense since it delivered the series‘ usual gameplay, and was in fact a gorgeous game since it was the first entry completely redrawn for HD displays, but it was so lean on characters, features, and overall content that it felt like a glorified demo with a $50 price tag.

The King of Fighters XIII

Auracore MediaWorks
18 February 2012
  • Summary: After all these years, these guys and gals still find something to fight about
  • Pros: More than adequate selection of characters, match types, and options to keep gamers' attention; online-play is generally consistent; ample amount of downloadable, unlockable content and achievements to acquire; unique character design coupled with excellent hand-drawn animation; pre-fight and post-fight trash talking are fun and informing to read; tutorial and practice modes serviceable for beginners or seasoned gamers alike; Mai Shiranui is still bouncy.
  • Cons: Stiff controls make pulling off the excessive amount of special moves and combos not worth the effort; despite the content, single player experience feels the same throughout due to AI that spams special moves; not one but two cheap boss fights, offers nothing new, nor anything that other fighting franchises have done better.

You're Doing It Wrong

TotalPlayStation.com

  • Conclusion: Playing KoF XIII is the closest thing to "work" I have felt here at TPS. I wasn't good and I had to earn every bit of ground I gained. Just know that you won't get your hand held by the game or its players, you'll get it broken.

The King of Fighters XIII Review (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3)

GameZone
30 November 2011
  • Excerpt: If it ain’t broke, why fix it?  For years, SNK has been attracting brawlers from all over the world with its King of Fighters series, mixing up folks from past and present games (including Athena and the Ikari Warriors!) into one big smorgasbord of projectiles, throws, and super attacks.  Each tournament has culminated into an epic battle, even though the somewhat-iffy King of Fighters XII left something to be desired.

Review: King of Fighters XIII for PS3

TechnologyTell
29 November 2011
  • Excerpt: When you think about it, King of Fighters XIII is kind of ironic. A really good game and one of the best, recent entries in the King of Fighters series, but still. SNK Playmore has been known for its fighting games for years, since back when arcades were where it was at. But now, it’s been sidelined by Capcom, Namco Bandai and Arc System Works.
  • Pros: 1 on 1 and 3 on 3 battles, nine gameplay modes, the story mode has visual novel segments, character sprites and environments look awesome, there’s online and offline multiplayer and there are 33 characters available.
  • Cons: You need 2,500,000 points in arcade mode by the end of the sixth regular match to move onto the two boss battles. Unlocking two of the characters in arcade mode is a bit random. The Tutorial mode isn’t very helpful. The story, even in the story mode which does a rather nice job of getting into details, is daunting and features lots of elements to consider.
