Reviews and Problems with Spiderman: Web of Shadows

A Slow Starter That Eventually Hits Its Super Hero Stride
22 September 2009
Conclusion: Concept: A combat-focused game that gets old quick
Graphics: Camera orientation problems and animation glitches abound
Sound: The voice acting is as bad as it gets
Playability: Repetition is the name of the game. As explosive as the new combat is, it's all this game has to offer
Entertainment: The game eventually delivers some thrills?after six hours.
Conclusion: Little else can be said about Web of Shadows except that unlike previous Spiderman titles, this one is intended for teenagers instead of younger kids, and it doesn’t help it along. Boss battles are not memorable and the few cameos other superheroes make are not particularly worthwhile. There is also a lack of unlockable secrets, which in the past had fans playing through the game over and over again to find each and every one of them.
Summary: I know Spider-Man likes to joke around, but he should start taking his video game career more seriously. Web of Shadows plays like a bad joke. Spider-Man's voiceover is so whiney and crackled he sounds like he lost his puberty, the missions are repetitive, the framerate chugs in certain spots, and the game's story and dialogue made me groan more than the cast of Night of the Living Dead.
Excerpt: Unless you live under a rock, you've no doubt heard the famous lines "Spider-Man, Spider-Man. Does whatever a spider can." In the Marvel universe, this statement is absolute truth. But for some reason, video games haven't been able to allow Spider-Man to do whatever a spider can. Spider-Man: Web of Shadows was supposed to change that and truly bring Spider-Man to life in a video game for the first time. Unfortunately, it fails at doing so miserably.
Excerpt: Imagine you’re Marvel. I mean, imagine you’re someone who works for Marvel, or you’re a director of the company. You have this little comic book called Spider-Man that has been quite popular over the years. In 2002 you release a movie that breaks all kinds of records on its way to a top 5 finish on the US all time box office charts, and follow it up with two more $300m plus movies. Spider-Man, friends, is one of the biggest movie series of all time.
Summary: Fun for a while, but the repetition will wear you down. With more variety in the action, Web of Shadows would have been a very good game. As it is, it's hard to recommend for anything other than a hire.
