Summary: Spare Parts is cute, but derivative and unpolished. There are some neat powers and level design, but poor platforming, repetitive combat, and a wayward camera hinder the experience. It's not without its charms and can be enjoyable, but there's nothing in here that hasn't been done better before.
Pros: Slick animations, Fun powers, High-fives!
Cons: Spotty platforming, Frustrating and broken camera, Too much repetitive combat near the end
Conclusion: On a technical level, Spare Parts runs fine on both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 with few differences between the two, although certain textures are slightly crisper on the Xbox 360. (We did, however, experience two lockups on the second boss while playing on the Xbox 360.) But spare yourself the disappointment of playing this underwhelming platformer.
Pros: Colorful, lively characters and environments, Excellent though ill-used narration by Simon Pegg.
Cons: Poor camera in cooperative mode, Repetitive button-mashing gameplay, Imprecise controls.
EA Bright Light Delivers Charm To Spare But Scrimps On Gameplay
24 January 2011
Conclusion: Concept: Explore a hostile planet with robots; gaining new upgrades and abilities to access new areas
Graphics: Characters are great looking and well animated, as are the environments
Sound: Compositions are appropriately lighthearted, and Simon Pegg’s turn as a friendly AI is warm and inviting
Playability: The fixed camera hurts the platforming sections, and boss battles last entirely too long
Entertainment: Spare Parts’ abundance of charm doesn’t save it from the dodgy...
Excerpt: The third wheel of the downloadable bandwagon It seems that in order to revert the bad image space as been given in the recent months thanks to Dead Space 2 and Mass Effect 2 , EA has set out to make the cutesiest, jumpiest, most simple platformer they could that only just about dodges a lawsuit with Ratchet & Clank . Enter Spare Parts , a sweetly innocent collect-’em-up about space wide adventures that has little ambition to reach any stars.
Pros: Crisp and colourful graphics, Great voice work by Simon Pegg
Cons: Very short lifespan, Linear adventure with basic obstacles to overcome, Little incentive to return and grab all the collectables on offer
