Soulcalibur V

destructoid.com
2 September 2013
  • Summary: Sex, souls, and swords; it’s hard not to find one of these pressed in your face during a heated SoulCalibur V battle, or at the very least when gazing upon the game’s Japanese marketing. We are all aware, by now, that sex sells, which is something the series has always dripped with. From its scantly clad woman to the chiseled bodies of its brutes, each entry in the series has been as aesthetically tantalizing as a Victoria’s Secret fashion show and SoulCalibur V is no...

Soulcalibur V

Auracore MediaWorks
22 February 2012
  • Summary: Namco's latest fighter is lacking some soul
  • Pros: Soulcalibur's core fighting mechanics remain rock solid; good variety of characters; superb graphics and animation; online multiplayer is quick and lag-free; Ezio makes for a nice bonus character.
  • Cons: Severe lack of modes; story mode is boring and short; no individual storylines or cinematics for individual characters; repetitive gameplay; the character creator is little more than a reskinning tool for existing characters; Nightmare is a super cheap boss.

Soulcalibur V

Thunderbolt Games
19 February 2012
  • Excerpt: Seventeen years. That’s how long it’s been since Siegfried killed Nightmare, destroying the cursed Soul Edge sword once and for all. The fighting should have ended there, but it didn’t. Despite being wiped out, its chaotic influence still held sway over the world. Thousands of innocent people were corrupted by its evil taint, and civilization descended further into anarchy. None of the characters got out of it unscathed. Sophitia died defending her children.

Soul Calibur V (PS3) Review

411mania.com
16 February 2012
  • Summary: Overall Soul Calibur V is a decent fighter entry. The story mode is lacking and the controls seem rather flawed. The game design looks great, but the story mode cut scenes are disappointing as is the storyline itself. There is a nice variety of characters and weapons to choose from, but I would’ve liked to have learned more about the other interesting characters you can play as in the more competitive modes of the game.

Soulcalibur V

Game Over Online
15 February 2012
  • Excerpt: There's something that leaves me cold about Soulcalibur V and I'm having a hard time putting my finger on it. Part of it is, of course, that they overhauled the roster and ditched my two main characters. There's a seventeen-year timeskip between Soulcalibur IV and this game, sort of like the generation gap between the second and third Tekken games, and they took the opportunity to ditch Xianghua and Seung Mina. Thanks, guys.

PS3 Review – SoulCalibur V

PlayStation LifeStyle
10 February 2012
  • Summary: SoulCalibur V has the series at odds. It’s a competent fighter, yes, but nothing about it really screams “must-have” unless you are a diehard fan.
  • Pros: + Tight controls, wonderful graphics and audio work., +/- More of the same SoulCalibur fighting system. Not much is new.
  • Cons: +/- More of the same SoulCalibur fighting system. Not much is new., - Boring story, aggravating difficulty ramp up in single player.

SoulCalibur V (PS3) - Review

VGChartz
9 February 2012
  • Excerpt: Releasing for the Dreamcast in 1999, Namco’s SoulCalibur (itself a sequel to 1996’s Soul Edge ) quickly created a niche for itself with its weapon-based combat and introduction of full three-dimensional arenas to fight in. Thirteen years and four sequels later, it’s apparent that not much has changed. SoulCalibur V continues the fighting franchise’s successful formula, scaling back the complexities of past entries for an intuitive, accessible experience.

Expert Review

Snackbar Games
8 February 2012
  • Excerpt: While the series itself has hit a couple bumps in the road, it seems like Soul Calibur V has made a conscious effort to restore things back to the way they once were. While it will never be the first or second game, I could say that this game has made its way back into my heart again.
  • Pros: Solid gameplay, lots of stuff to collect, robust character creation mode, detailed online mode
  • Cons: Lots of stuff to collect (and a lot of work to collect it), lack of previous games’ single-player modes
