Sonic Ultimate Genesis Collection (PS3) Review

411mania.com
3 December 2009
  • Summary: We have 49 games for roughly $30. Between all the games you have hundreds of hours of gameplay. You can also learn a bit about Sega’s history while you play. There is a lot of bang for your buck here! This is probably the first Sega made game since Virtua Fighter 5 that I recommend, hands down, to everyone who owns a Playstation 3, whether you have a soft spot for the classics or not. Now Sega, release a Sega CD/Sega Saturn collection to make us all happy!

SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection Review

  • Excerpt: Were you a SEGA or Nintendo kid? I don't know about you, but in my school it was all about SEGA. While I've heard stories of these legendary playground fights between rival SEGA and Nintendo fans (this was a time when fanboys stood and fought with honour and didn't hide behind internet avatars), my experience was more who owned certain games rather than who owned a certain console.

Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection

  • Conclusion: "Ultimate '80s-style Beat-'em-up Collection" would have worked too, since this collection brings us the three volumes of the excellent Streets of Rage series, the entire progressively declining Golden Axe series, and a few laughable blasts from the past, like E-SWAT and Alien Syndrome (which my mom made me return unopened because it looked too violent—remind me to thank her). As always, there are plenty of troubling omissions.

  • Conclusion: The emulations have been developed by Backbone Entertainment, which has a great reputation in this field thanks to producing huge numbers of arcade and retro console emulations for Xbox Live Arcade. Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection is definitely one of its greatest works, as evidenced by the consistent frame rate and animations, even when playing the games in full-screen HD.

Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection

Digital Chumps
3 April 2009
  • Conclusion: My complaints are negligible; Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection is my childhood on a disc. True, we've seen a half dozen Sonic collections before and a fair number of these titles haven't aged so well, but this is, without a doubt, the best yet roundup from the better parts of Sega's 16-bit library.

  • Excerpt: Compilations of classic console and arcades have become a genre of their own. Everyone from Atari to Activision has been making good money re-releasing their oldies, although it seems that Nintendo has made the best deal out of it by selling single games for five, eight, and ten bucks apiece on Wii Virtual Console.

  • Conclusion: The definitive assembly of some of the Genesis' best games. Yes, there could always be more (and there likely will be), but what's here is absolutely fantastic. If you have any love for some of the best games of the early-to-mid 90s, you'll grab this.

Talking About Games
20 February 2009
  • Excerpt: If there is one thing I never was, it was a Sega fanboy. As a matter of fact, I was quite the opposite. While every so often I would get a chance to play on a Sega Genesis, I never owned the system. However, I always stood in awe of the ability of Sega.
