Shellshock 2: Blood Trails Review
21 December 2009
Excerpt: When you know next to nothing about a game prior to it arriving in the post, you tend to go into it expecting the worst. It's hard not to wonder why said game hasn't received the usual pre-release press tour and why only a handful of screen shots, and even less video footage, have been released.
Conclusion: I'm not quite sure what the developers of this title were thinking. Did the plug get pulled halfway through development? Did the creative lead get fired and replaced by someone who really didn't care what the final result was as long at it was finished on time? It's such a shame, as the premise and setting are rather interesting. It's been a long time since we've had a first person shooter set in the jungle. In fact I can't remember one this generation.
Excerpt: Trying to review Shellshock 2 isn’t so much like analysing the game’s individual parts to see how they fit together as a whole as listing a bunch of suggestions on how to make an awful FPS. It tries to come across as a mixture between the warfare of Call of Duty and the horror of Condemned , but it’s so far below either it’s almost an insult to those two series to mention them in the same paragraph.
Excerpt: Vietnam shooters apparently need more than just Charlie creeping through the jungle these days. ShellShock 2: Blood Trails takes a sharp left turn away from its gritty, realistic 2004 predecessor, ShellShock: Nam '67, and throws zombie hordes into the expected mix of AK-47s and rice paddies. Combining horror with stereotypical first-person shooter combat does little to make the game stand apart from the crowd, however.
Pros: A few good scares, along with some unsettling gore
Cons: Dumb enemies, Terrible controls make accurate aiming almost impossible, Simplistic levels based around triggering spawn points, Short single-player campaign, No multiplayer
Summary: This is one soldier that never really made it out of boot camp. In a world of high quality shooters, Shellshock 2 lacks the flair and polish necessary to put up a convincing fight. Time for these zombies to climb back into their graves and have a good, long think about what they've done.
