Shadows of the Damned

  • Summary: A demon with a goat's head is riding a horse that defecates pure darkness. Then the demon eats the horse's heart, grows to the size of a ten-story building, eats the rest of the horse and proceeds to urinate more darkness into a gigantic fountain. That's just the first boss. Welcome to Shadows of the Damned .

  • Excerpt: When booting up a new game from Grasshopper Manufacture there's only one thing you know for sure, and that's that a whole load of craziness is about to ensue. With everything from a boss battle against a giant crow with a potty mouth, to disembodied baby heads screaming for strawberries, to a one-eyed bat that leaves a pile of sizzling excrement to mark your progress, Shadows of the Damned certainly does not buck that trend.

  • Excerpt: Shadows of the Damned is set in Hell, though you'll occasionally wonder why things don't always look hellish. I say "occasionally," because this game is, in fact, seriously messed up -- and I mean that in the best possible way. This version of Hell is less about fire and brimstone and more about Gothic architecture and an oppressive, creeping darkness.

  • Conclusion: The game delivers what you might expect from two iconic developers. Unique story, plenty of grindhouse-style visuals and slightly lackluster gameplay. Fans of these auteurs will be pleased. Parents of impressionable youths will not.

  • Conclusion: Shadows of the Damned isn’t for the fainthearted, nor is it for those who are after serious titles. In fact, if you approach it with a survival horror mindset you’ll actually find yourself confused. Anyone else will love it. Its freshness shows just how stale a lot of the industry is and it’s what’s needed in an era of grey, modern shooters. Go buy it now.

Shadows of the Damned Review

  • Excerpt: Shadows of the Damned is batshit crazy. Quite literally, at times. In the rotten bowels of the underworld, checkpoints are signified by a one-eyed bat called Willy, who - when passed - takes a quick dump to mark your progress. Doors to new areas are adorned with the faces of grotesque babies, who must be fed brains, eyes and (spot the odd one out) strawberries in order to open. Your gun can talk and is called Johnson.

  • Summary: Fun beyond a shadow of a damned
  • Pros: Unique mixture of adolescent humour and tense horror; creative environments, weapons, characters and bosses; upgrade system allows you to customize your experience; solid shooting mechanics and puzzles; great presentation.
  • Cons: Very short campaign and little replay value; no multiplayer; some humour can feel forced; a little on the easy side.

Shadows of the Damned

Thunderbolt Games

  • Excerpt: Reveling in its grotesque aesthetic, Shadows of the Damned exists as an unapologetic celebration of infantile humor, cult grindhouse films, and the unmatched credentials of its creators. As a collaborative effort between the manic creativity of Suda 51 and the distinguished design philosophy of Shinji Mikami, the title draws freely from both designers’ back-catalogs. Suffice it to say Shadows of the Damned has a lot going for it.
