Conclusion: If you’re looking for a game that will hold your attention span past the first few hours, Rise of the Argonauts is not the game for you. Through the nine or so hours it took to complete the game, there were practically only a few hours worthy of my time and they all came at the start of the game. By the end of the game, Rise of the Argonauts was monotonous to the point where it was a pain to play through.
Excerpt: Regular readers of Gamerstemple.com might remember a review I wrote about six months ago for the PS3 version of the once-360 exclusive, Overlord, called Overlord: Raising Hell . Most of the review consisted of me expressing amazement that not only was this little-known game by the not-quite-household-name developer Codemasters actually rather awesome, but it was, in fact, as much or more fun than the bigger name games hitting shelves at the time, namely Ninja Gaiden II...
Summary: " Rise Of The Argonauts " is a really odd game. It’s so unusual for a title to absolutely nail some parts of a game, and then have other parts which are a total horrible mess. If this was some kind of interactive DVD that just told the story using the in-game engine, using the music and everything, this would score really highly.
Summary: Codemaster’s Rise of the Argonauts is an action RPG that is considerably smaller in scope than most other RPGs on the market. Its linear questline offers very little character jiggering and suffers from mediocre combat that gets repetitive due to a lack of variety of weapons, enemies and moves.
Excerpt: Ancient Greek mythology is no stranger to the gaming world, having served as the centerpiece for the recent blockbuster series God of War. Codemasters takes a crack at the fabled era with Rise of the Argonauts, an Xbox 360 game that attempts to combine the action-packed combat of Kratos' games with elements of western RPGs like Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic. Is the combination worthy of the praise of Olympus or another abomination doomed to Tartarus?
Excerpt: Name: Rise of the Argonauts Genre: Action, Role-Playing Game Platform: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC (Reviewed on PS3) Rise of the Argonauts is like a brilliant story written by a terrible author; filled with technical issues and poor design choices that will have you questioning why the game was rushed for a late-December release when it obviously would have been better suited to a mid-year release and the extended development time that would entail.
Summary: Loosely based on the same Greek myth that inspired the 1963 movie Jason and the Argonauts , Rise of the Argonauts is an action-oriented role-playing game in which you assume the role of King Jason of Iolcus and go in search of the legendary Golden Fleece. All manner of monsters stand between you and your prize, and doing battle with them is a lot of fun.
Pros: Combat is fast-paced and satisfying, Superb character-progression system
Cons: Way too much walking and talking, Quality of animation is inconsistent, Frame rate drops dramatically for no obvious reason, Poor voice acting not helped by sloppy sound design
Excerpt: The graphic combat and rich storyline are let down by tiresome dialogue and endless and confusing travel. If you are a fan of the period and want to wallow in the mythology then this game has it by the bucket (amphora?) load, however game wise its lurching pace destroys its underlying potential.
Pros: In places the graphics can be quite stunning and the combat effects take cracking skulls and slice 'n' dicing to the extreme.
