Summary: My relationship with Q-Games and their wonderful PixelJunk series of downloadable games has followed a very similar path to that of courting a real-life future companion. After their first PixelJunk game, Racers , I felt something. It wasn’t infatuation -- more of a friend crush -- but I knew I liked being in their company. Next, with Monsters , I started feeling pretty hot. I was completely turned on.
Summary: In PixelJunk Shooter 2, players pilot a subterranean exploration vehicle to explore the interior of diverse cave-like complexes. The player must affect the surrounding and dynamic terrain to progress. The goal is to safely navigate through each vivid stage and rescue survivors scattered about the cavernous environment.
Excerpt: PixelJunk Shooter 2 forgoes polygons in favor of solid colors and mesmerizing fluid physics. It looks like a Flash game with a high budget, and that's exactly the right look for this title. Everything looks simple, yet the style pops in its own special way. The artists and level designers clearly worked with each other every step of the way, and as a result, PixelJunk Shooter 2 looks clean and confident from beginning to end.
Excerpt: At the risk of sounding like a broken record , the PixelJunk series looks pixel perfect all the time: No exceptions. It’s almost boring to fire up PixelJunk Shooter 2 to discover that, yup, this too has the series’ trademark pristine visual quality. ‘Clarity’ is the word that seems most apt, since it’s as much well-designed mechanics that make the game shine as its art. That this console generation has an odd idea of HD makes Q-Games’ creations all the more notable.
Excerpt: More than a year after Alien Breed Evolution part 1 (AKA Alien Breed: Impact ) started this episodic reboot of Alien Breed, we finally reach the third. Picking up right where the second ( Assault ) left off, you continue the adventures of resident Chief Engineer, Theodore J. Conrad, as he blasts his way through the alien hordes aboard a derelict space ship.
Excerpt: Pixeljunk Shooter’s fluid dynamics were something to behold. Focusing a game not just on how liquid flows, but also on how different substances interact with each other is an interesting concept, but the game spent so long introducing each liquid that it only achieved a reasonable level of difficulty near the end, right before the obvious cliffhanger ending. Q-Games are giving the series another shot with Shooter 2.
Excerpt: Who would’ve thought a name like “PixelJunk” would be synonymous with slick albeit simplistic quality? This series has been fantastic for PlayStation Network members as developer Q-Games continues to churn out highly refined and entertaining downloadable experiences.
Conclusion: PixelJunk Shooter 2 is Q-Games' most complete and robust package yet, offering not only an excellently polished single-player campaign, but also what will likely go down in history as one of the year's best multiplayer experiences.
