NIER Review

GamerNode
9 February 2011
  • Excerpt: Nier is a game primarily about loss, pain, and suffering; ironically, it is also a breath of fresh air. This multi-genre adventure by Cavia may struggle to nail down mechanical grace, but survives and shines on the quality of its writing — its characters, commentary, and the heavy themes it lays on players — making it a surprisingly original and enjoyable experience, and the best thing to come out of Square-Enix in 2010, besting even the publisher’s flagship franchise,...
  • Pros: Mature storytelling, Deep characters, New game plus expands the narrative further, Experiments with and provides commentary on genre, Side-quests are optional
  • Cons: Loose controls, Dated graphics, Too many bullet-hell segments

Nier Game Accessibility Review (PS3)

ablegamers.com
4 January 2011
  • Excerpt: Ghost of Christmas Past, nope, it’s just the Nier review I wish I would have had it in me to write when I wrote about it all those months ago… The game opens up with the usual studio/publisher logos, which are nicely done on either black or white backgrounds depending upon the color used for each respectively. The last shown before the game is ready to go is for Square Enix, which shows up on a black background.

Expert Review

Game Informer

  • Summary: Nier held my attention for over 30 hours. In this time, I traveled great lengths to harvest materials to upgrade my weapons, helped villagers with their chores, became the land’s premiere pumpkin grower, and amassed 100-hit combos through the game’s excellently crafted swordplay. I also spent roughly half of my time walking. Who am I supposed to be? Gandhi? Nier’s biggest problem is its vast stretches of uneventful wandering.

To Nier or Not?

GIN
18 October 2010
  • Excerpt: Nier is a game where I learned my lesson; don't judge a game by its cover or trailers. I was excited to play this action RPG, but the longer I did play it my excitement dwindled to a slow dread. Here was a game published by Square Enix that no one was talking about. I found this very strange. None on my classmates that are gamers even heard of it.

Zeitgeist Review
29 August 2010
  • Summary: So after playing through Nier , it turned out to be nothing like what I thought it was going to be. The combat, magic and puzzle mechanics are quite fun, but the true star of the game is the plot twisting story. Seriously, after beating the game I still have no idea what the hell just happened. When you load your cleared game it actually starts you about half way through, so you don’t really have to play the entire thing again.

NIER

Strategy Informer

  • Conclusion: As an action-RPG, perhaps there is a better option available if you’ve yet to play through Darksiders, but Nier still manages to stand on its own accomplishments – as varied in mechanics and quality as they may be. For that reason alone, I’d suggest giving it a try.

Review: Nier (Sony PS3)

Diehard GameFAN
23 August 2010
  • Summary: Though the graphics may not be the best, Nier’s story and characters can easily catapult it up to a very high rating. The controls are sometimes a little annoying, but overall the gameplay is consistently fun. You won’t find any other game like this, so my suggestion is that you, at the very least, rent it.

Nier

Playstation Illustrated
22 August 2010
  • Excerpt: Nier is a game that triple dog dares you to love it. And every now and then, you will. But every time you settle into a groove, the game throws a curve ball squarely at your expectations. Nier is not a disaster. It's not doomed to be remembered as one of this generation's worst role-playing games. In fact, I'm convinced it will become a cult classic. You will admire Nier for its triumphs and resent it for its failures.

NIER Review

VideoGamer.com
20 August 2010
  • Excerpt: Where to start with NIER, perhaps the most genre-bending game of 2010? This JRPG from cavia (Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles) is a hodgepodge of so many gameplay types that it's impossible to work out, even once completed, what, exactly, it is. This is undoubtedly a good thing.
