Mercenaries 2: World in Flames
5 March 2009
Excerpt: Mercenaries 2: World in Flames is the videogame equivalent of a Michael Bay movie. There are numerous technical issues and the story leaves a lot to be desired, but after a few massive explosions, everything seems right in the world. The best way to grasp the game's scope is by jacking a helicopter and taking an aerial tour of the country. Once you're in the air, you'll begin to notice that Mercenaries 2 manages to look great and okay at the same exact time.
Conclusion: Both Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 versions suffer from atrocious mission load times, including a dreaded five-minute plus initial install to the hard-drive on PS3. All the waiting, AI and firearm issues can't take away from the primal enjoyment of blowing up everything in sight, especially with a friend. If playing to make things go "boom" puts a smile on your face, the time to take on Venezuela is at hand.
Pros: Blowing up stuff is a "blast", Cooperative play is a welcome addition, Above average audio and voiceovers, Money leaderboard is challenging to ascend, Vehicle play beats on-foot play
Cons: AI needs to go back to school, Gun combat is inaccurate, Poor load times, Graphics are "bland"
Excerpt: Switching hands from LucasArts to Electronic Arts, Pandemic's epically destructive Mercenaries brand has finally arrived onto the next-generation consoles with a sequel that stars the original cast of three. Initially planned for a release in Fall 07, the game ultimately underwent 10 months worth of delays, but it's better off for it. When we first played Mercenaries 2 at E3 07, the game was noticeably early and running poorly.
Summary: Pandemic has constructed a whole new "playground of destruction" from the ground up, fully stocked with the hottest vehicles and weapons. Set in a new exotic hotspot, you can be your own boss in a wide-open world with only one rule: everybody pays.
Conclusion: Despite its many issues, Mercenaries 2 provides a solid experience. With its open world environments, plethora of vehicles and weaponry, Mercenaries 2 provides several instances of non-stop action. For those who are fans of the Grand Theft Auto series, especially GTAIV, will appreciate the grandeur Mercenaries 2 provides within its environments and gameplay experiences. Considering you can pick up this game brand new for $19.99, it’s definitely worth your time and money.
Excerpt: Pandemic decided to once again go the semi-realistic route with basing the game in Venezuela two years in the future, something that country has not been very happy about and have vocally said so. “This is a game after all, who cares?” we might say, although once again Allied Nations (or the “USA” the soldiers are happy to call it before correctly themselves) and the People’s Republic of China show up a good deal into the game to add to the factions and the whole...
