Excerpt: The NFL has a lot of similarities to rugby: There are two teams. They play with an oval ball. The one team has to get the ball into the goal area, while the other team tries to stop them by tackling the player with the ball…oh wait, in NFL you can tackle anybody. Uhm…both sports have crowds. OK, so rugby and American Football are nothing alike. They can’t even get their own game right, and thus play football with their hands!
Conclusion: This is the least flashy Madden to date, and I mean it in a good way. With no crazy 3D menus, VR practice modes, over-the-top hip-hop presentation, this year Madden seems to be more about the sport of football and less about the attitude portrayed by its advertisers. The game looks and plays clean, and this is possibly the best Madden to date. It's simply too bad they try to nickel and dime you by charging for game modes and cheat codes that are already on the disc.
Pros: Excellent online franchise mode, Menus and music have a more "grown-up" feel, Animation is better than ever, New Pro-Tak system makes playing defense a lot more fun, Excellent online franchise mode, Menus and music have a more "grown-up" feel, Animation is better than ever, New Pro-Tak system makes playing defense a lot more fun
Cons: Commentary is still reptitive, and mediocre at best, The game comes at full price, but they try to nickel and dime you with pay-for-use cheat codes, Animation is better than ever but still quite stiff, Commentary is still reptitive, and mediocre at best, The game comes at full price, but they try to nickel and dime you with pay-for-use cheat codes, Animation is better than ever but still quite stiff
Excerpt: It's August, so the NFL preseason is getting under way. And that means one other thing: The new Madden is here, Madden NFL 10. Curiously, it's the first Madden game to blatantly gouge its fan base.
Summary: With every new Madden release, there are almost always one or two features that get the bulk of the attention--features that not only make the current Madden different from its predecessors, but also seemingly make the upgrade from one year to the next worthwhile. Madden NFL 10 is no different in this respect.
Pros: Pro-Tak gives some oomph to the game, Online franchise works well, Passing game feels more realistic, Streamlined menus make it easier to jump around
Cons: Commentary is still pretty bad, Downfield run blocking still needs work, AI defensive schemes are a little inconsistent, Enough with the referee cutscenes
Excerpt: The Madden franchise, despite its sales success, faces the most criticism year after year. How do you keep your game fresh and new, while at the same time keeping the same fundamental system that fans have grown to love? Last year’s iteration was a step in the right direction, and fortunately for football fans, EA Sports and Tiburon kept on the same path. Madden NFL 10 is a great football game, both for the seasoned Madden vet and the new-to-the-franchise crowd.
