Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
30 May 2012
Excerpt: Conceptually, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning isn't very original. It's a role-playing game set in a pseudo open world with a rather standard narrative at the center. However, it's not my job to review concepts. My job is to let you know how good the final game is. Well, hear me: while Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning isn't original, it's a damn fine role-playing game that's well worth your time and money. Technically, Reckoning isn't really a stunner.
Excerpt: 2011 will forever go down in history as one of the greatest years in gaming. Whether you are a First Person Shooter fan, Action Adventure, or maybe you just like to dance, 2011 held something for just about everyone. RPG fans, however, were treated especially well, getting hammered month after month by top quality RPGs like The Witcher 2, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Dark Souls – the list goes on and on.
Excerpt: What do you get when you mix R.A. Salvatore (veteran fantasy author), Todd McFarlane (creator of Spawn), and Ken Rolston (lead designer for Morrowind and Oblivion)? Other than a brainstorming sessions I would kill to sit in on, you get Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, the latest fantasy style RPG.
Pros: + Fun and rewarding combat system that outclasses nearly every other title in the role-playing genre., + The beautiful art design and engaging story will have you lost in the world of Amalur.
Cons: + Fun and rewarding combat system that outclasses nearly every other title in the role-playing genre., - Occasional texture pop-in and frame-rate slowdown mars an otherwise super-polished experience.
Excerpt: 8th March 2012 - The last action RPG I really got stuck into was Dragon Age 2 and it left me a little disappointed. It was no Dragon Age: Origins, sure the fighting was faster paced and more action orientated but it felt an overall more shallow experience. When I saw the first promo for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning my interest was peaked. I hadn’t heard of it that long before launch, it certainly looked the part and on paper sounded like a solid experience.
Conclusion: Ok, so being the “One” and harnessing "fate" as a weapon has its advantages and disadvantages. The story is so intricately woven that you’re friends and enemies are often blurred and indistinctive. You can make good decisions or selfish decisions, be a true blue hero or achieve your goals via fear. The one thing Amular has over Skyrim is that the combat mechanics are better.
