Summary: " I'm a hustler, baby. I just want you to know. " Well, those would be the lyrics I would sing as I entered my local pool hall, hoping to scam friend and stranger alike in a friendly game of billiards. Of course, I was no hustler and always ended up either losing money or not even having the guts to bet in the first place. That is why I turned to videogame billiards. It offered a precision I couldn't gain on the felt tables, mainly due to my lack of geometry skill.
Excerpt: Time is a funny thing really. Just when you think your gaming skills have improved over the years, a game like Mega Man 9 comes along and puts you in your place. This is a sequel to CAPCOM’s long-running plaftorm series, which started in 1987. Although this is no flashy next-generation remake. On the contrary, this is true sequel, with old-skool graphics, bleepy sound and a true 80′s difficulty setting. In other words, this is a veteran’s dream!
Summary: Hustle Kings is a good purchase if you really enjoy pool, have friends who also like to play pool, and can’t get to an actual table. However, the single player mode is such a travesty that I can’t really justify purchasing it unless you’re going to spend your entire time with the game online. The game is lazy, has terrible AI, a somewhat bare-bones (but effective) online mode, and offensive attempts to steal money from unsuspecting gamers looking for an edge.
Excerpt: With the likes of multiplayer smash hit Battlefield 1943 , art-house beauty Flower and brilliant action-adventures Shadow Complex and Trine , 2009 was a year when downloadable console games really proved their value and came of age. Lesser known but deserving of as much acclaim is Sony’s excellent billiards game Hustle Kings ; a quiet Winter release and a surprisingly confident debut release from small English developer VooFoo Studios.
Conclusion: Hustle Kings isn't another shoddy download game. It brings a high quality pool sim experience through the PSN and gives you a lot to do included with the price of admission. It is a great way to learn more about the many games of pool out there.
Excerpt: Considering the vast number of games based around billiards that have been released over the years, Hustle Kings has a lot to live up to and has to make itself stand out among the crowd. And it succeeds. The one major thing that sets this game out from the rest is the visuals. The billiard table and balls are so close to photo-realistic that if one isn't familiar with general graphic design, they could be mistaken for photographs.
Excerpt: There are a good amount of sports games to download on the PlayStation Network, but most of them are easy enough to pass up.
Pros: Online play increases lasting appeal., Lots of gameplay options., Can't beat the price, only $9.99.
Cons: AI is either too easy or too hard., Text is too small on the menus., DLC is minimal and useless.
Hustle Kings review
1 July 2010
Excerpt: Hustle Kings is an easy to pick up pool title accessible to the masses on PSN. Despite a few shortcomings, it'll keep fans entertained for some time to come. It is an excellent virtual pool game, nothing more, nothing less.
Pros: Slick graphics. Mostly good soundtrack. Capable gameplay. Things to purchase in the store to add to your game. Pretty accurate physics.
Cons: It's not going to be for everyone. Buying new avatars is pointless. Besides the presentation it is not that different from other virtual pool games. Seems to be missing that satisfied feeling you can get when playing the real game.
