Genji: Days of the Blade Review

PlayStation Universe
8 April 2009
  • Summary: Genji: Days of the Blade's uninspiring gameplay, linear levels, and awful camera destroy any illusion the quality graphics and audio may hold over you.
  • Pros: Graphics are nice and animation is good., A rousing, and immersive soundtrack is definitely a high point., Genji: Days of the Blade has downloadable content.
  • Cons: Gameplay is slow, clunky, uninspired, and boring., Levels are very linear., An awful camera hurts playability.

  • Summary: What's really disappointing about Genji's next generation debut comes in the realization that these problems were very much evident in the PS2 edition. The developers have seemingly made no effort to fix them here - the basic structure and premise are largely unchanged. As mentioned earlier, the fixed camera angles allow for a more cinematic approach, but they undermine the gameplay, making you feel like you're barely interacting with a movie, not playing a game.

  • Excerpt: Genji: Days of the Blade is a pretty game -- in fact, it's downright gorgeous. Unfortunately, looks are just half the battle (maybe even less than half, depending on philosophy you subscribe to), and Genji: Days of the Blade is a game that looks very good but plays very badly.

  • Excerpt: To say that the majority of PS3 launch titles were underwhelming would be putting things a little lightly. Save for a couple titles, the entire launch was filled with ports of games that had been out for some time on other consoles, and in the majority of cases no noticeable improvements were made to the titles. Genji: Day of the Blade is one of the exclusive launch titles that launched the PS3 and welcomed in the new generation of gaming, because Sony said so.

  • Conclusion: This kind of game really isn't what you paid a grand for a console to play. It's uninspired even by PS2 and Xbox standards, let alone current gen. All Genji offers you is a good old mashfest with some glossy visuals. If this is what you got a PlayStation 3 for, knock yourself out. Just don't expect anything beyond a basic battler.
  • Pros: Looks good
  • Cons: Genji will make you ask yourself: has watching paint dry been given a bad rap?
