Excerpt: Far Cry 2 is an ambitious title, and though it is not without its rough points, it manages to live up to the lofty goals it sets for itself. Perhaps the most ambitious of these goals is its scope. You are given nearly 50 square kilometers of open landscape to play around in. There's no shortage of things to see; trees sway in the African breeze and sunsets reflect light off bodies of water. You'll see a lot of those sunsets as you explore.
Summary: It’s easy to be a bit disappointed at first, even overwhelmed. I was. At first, for the fist few hours of play, I debated whether I would have been better off with Call of Duty: World at War. But I stuck with this game and discovered how amazing it is. The open world setting makes you the real protagonist, because you can practically do what you want, when you want. Multiplayer was a total disappointment, but the single-player experience is a true shining star.
Summary: Far Cry 2 immerses players in an entirely new kind of gaming experience, featuring a custom-made video game engine built from the ground up. Players will discover a true open world gameplay set in one of the most beautiful environments in the world, Africa.
Conclusion: Far Cry 2 is a massive game. I know I didn’t get to touch on everything this game has to offer because Far Cry 2 is that big. The story, with all of its characters, will take you between 40 to 70 hours to beat. When was the last time a FPS took this long to beat? As of now Far Cry 2 might very well be the picture perfect first-person shooter. All of the games pluses out weight the minuses.
Excerpt: If a solid first-person shooter brings tears to your eyes, it's time to turn on the waterworks. Far Cry 2 is a sequel-in-name, but it ditches the uninteresting lead character from the first game, taking a realistic mercenary angle that leaves no room for the super-powered mutant shenanigans of the past. Instead, you'll get mission-based, open world gameplay and a few buddies to watch your back.
Conclusion: Far Cry 2 is what you might call a risky move. In a culture of playing it safe with first person shooters, Ubisoft Montreal has created a title where you have to essentially make your own fun. It gives you all the tools you need, but at the end of the day you'll only get out of Far Cry 2 what you want. If you go in and treat it like some generic shooter in a giant map, that's what you're going to get.
Pros: Massive map with loads to do., Great, branching storyline., The map editor is great., Looks and sounds fantastic.
Cons: Some might find the giant map overwhelming., Multiplayer isn't great... yet.
