Excerpt: Making his first apperance on the Playstation 3, Earthworm Jim HD is a suped up version of the now 16 year old zany Earthworm Jim game from Super Nintendo days. Those that remember the craziness of the original will be right at home here, but Gameloft does very little in the form of explanitory narratives to give new players the backstory on our action-infused earthworm.
Excerpt: Earthworm Jim is a game about a lucky little worm named Jim who accidentally falls into an alien super suit which causes him to grow into enormous proportions and give him sentience. Jim uses his new found powers, a plasma pistol, super strength, and limbs , to fight his way across the galaxy in order to save Princess What’s-Her-Name from the evil Queen Slug-for-a-butt.
Excerpt: First Impressions My reaction is Back in the mid-90s, if you had either a SNES or a Mega Drive it is likely that you both played and loved Earthworm Jim. It was hard not to. For starters it looked fantastic and it had a sense of humor seldom found in video games. To this day I still can’t think of a funnier conclusion to a game.
Conclusion: Earthworm Jim HD faithfully reproduces the experience of the original game. For some, that means a distressing test of patience by way of unrefined platforming elements, and to others, a delightful romp through a surreal and bizarre landscape exclusive to the 90's. Extra content, a serious presentation upgrade, and a decent multiplayer suite take some of the sting away, but, for better and/or worse, Earthworm Jim is still Earthworm Jim.
Summary: Though some of its mechanics are archaic and its exposition head scratching, Earthworm Jim HD is an enjoyable game thanks to fun gameplay, bonus content, crisp visual, and a mostly great sense of humor that keeps the player amused from start to finish. If you go into this expecting a modern game, you will be disappointed, but as far as retro game ports go, this one is pretty solid and is something most people should try, if only so we can get a new Earthworm Jim game...
Excerpt: Remakes. Man, what a can of worms! Personally I am not very fond of remakes. You always have some fond memories of a particular song, and then you hear a new rendition of the song by some rapper with a lisp and the whole song is ruined, forever. Movies are seldom as good as the originals, and games work pretty much the same way. But there is a type of “remake” that is different: remastered games.
