Summary: The only reason to consider playing Damnation is if you find it the $5 bin and can convince a friend to laugh his or her way through it on co-op with you. The hilariously terrible story plays out like a 13-year-old boy wrote it during math class, and the platforming is a constant, boring pain in the ass. Combat fares no better, with its slow-to-appear aiming reticle and silly punches.
An Awesome Concept and Setting Can't Elevate Lame Writing and Gunplay
22 September 2009
Conclusion: Concept: Take action/platform conventions and make them unplayable
Graphics: Enemies stupidly fire at you in stiff, animation-free poses
Sound: Sometimes characters talk to one another, but you won't likely understand where those conversations are going
Playability: A lack of cover system is the least of this game's problems; Damnation is buggier than a road trip through Alabama swampland
Entertainment: As bad as the game is, it's so easy I was never frustrated with it.
Conclusion: In closing, Damnation promises so much but delivers so little that it’s barely worth playing. Switch off your brain completely and it’s almost bearable for half an hour at a generous push, but you’ll be too distracted by pop-in, slowdown, clipping and other inexplicably bad technical issues to really enjoy the experience.
Excerpt: Would it be wrong for me to start a review by saying this may be one of the worst games I've played in the past three years? Usually I'll put together some spiel with a background and introduction that eventually leads into the review. But in this situation, I'm afraid there's really no introduction to make. This is comically bad.
Excerpt: I have to admit that like a lot of other people, I was looking forward to Damnation. I love games set in the old West, and the addition of an alternate timeline and a steampunk theme made this one even better, at least on paper. The fact that the game promised to use vertical elements in the level design also was intriguing. Unfortunately, the final game didn't come out anywhere near my expectations.
Conclusion: I really miss the "What if"-comic Marvel published many years ago. Where their super heroes by a twist of fate got everything else changed so nothing is the way it normally is. I remember being especially fascinated by a particular adventure where Spider-Man got enormous spider legs growing out of his body, giving him a rather monstrous look.
Pros: The vehicles are quite fun, the idea behind the story is good
Cons: Really bad level design, the controls sucks, the dialogue is worthless, stupid AI, boring weapons
