PS3 Review - 'Cars Mater-National'
31 March 2008
Summary: Cars Mater-National offers a fresh adventure set in the super-fueled world of Radiator Springs, featuring all-new international characters vying for their chance to compete against Lightning McQueen in the First Annual Mater-National Race Festival.
Excerpt: What is it? A racing game in which you must compete against other residents of Radiator Springs, home of racing supremeo Lighting McQueen. Based on the Disney Pixar movie Cars, but not a video game of the movie. Cars Mater-National is in fact a sequel to the officially licensed game of the movie, although its core gameplay is very similar. Complexity Essentially a racing game, so anyone familiar with the core dynamics of the genre won't have too many problems.
Excerpt: As far as licensed games go, Cars wasn't that bad. It suffered from some of the more common problems that face licensed games, but overall it was a fun experience that captured the feel of the movie. Cars Mater-National not only follows up on the game, but is a follow-up of sorts for the movie. Though it still has problems, it is still just as fun as the original. Cars Mater-National comes pretty close to matching the movie.
Excerpt: As one of the most entertaining and popular movies of 2006, "Cars" broke through age boundaries and managed to appeal to just about anybody. The ensuing game wasn't anywhere near as good as the film - hardly a big surprise - but it was mildly fun for fans of the game, and the sales numbers were good enough for THQ to publish a sequel.
Summary: Cars Mater-National
feels like more of an expansion pack than a true sequel, but it will of course (and already has) sell another bajillion copies for THQ. That being said, fans of the movie that haven't had enough of Lightning McQueen and friends yet will get some mileage out of this return to Radiator Springs.
Pros: A ton of races and other events to compete in., Some interesting gameplay modes.
Cons: Virtually no enhancements gameplay-wise over the first, Cars, game., The graphics are virtually unchanged from the Xbox 360 version of, Cars, , and Tailfin Pass in particular looks bad with flat-textured trees, washed out colors, etc.
