Summary: Years in the making at different studios, Ubisoft's I Am Alive brings the Xbox Live Arcade "House Party" to a close with a post-apocalyptic bang. A story of survival, it's full of ideas and twists on the action-adventure conventions we've grown used to. It's also yet another ambitious title in a recent string of games that tries to make us rethink what to expect from studios in the downloadable space.
Excerpt: is a difficult game to accurately analyze. If you go search the available review scores, you’ll see a range of 4.5 to 9 and just about everything in between. After playing, I’ve concluded that the reason is as follows: if you care more about the technical elements, if the occasionally awkward control annoys you, and if the slight lapses of realism become too glaring, you’re going to hate it.
Excerpt: Set in a post apocalyptic world, Ubisoft's I AM ALIVE might sound like another clichéd survival horror game but in actual fact, it's probably one of the most realistic third person shooters to date. Imagine a world where I AM LEGEND meets MAD MAX and this is the world that you will be playing as society has crumbled due to some mysterious event and from the lack of order, chaos reigns.
Excerpt: Given its years-long and seemingly troubled development, I Am Alive's world is appropriately rickety, run-down, and treacherous. There are some intriguing ideas in this harrowing tale of survival, used to pepper what would otherwise be an experience driven exclusively by well-trod gameplay mechanics. Does the game rise above its dire circumstances, or should it give up and succumb to harsh reality?
Conclusion: Sure there are moments when a couple of thugs will jump you, and if you’re not ready you’ve lost a lot of progress, but in general it all adds to an atmosphere reliant on a fear of death that is rarely experienced in a modern game. Yes there are occasional bugs (one required me to re-download the entire 2gb), and less proficient players may baulk at the unforgiving nature of the game, but I can strongly recommend I Am Alive to players that may be looking for a more...
Pros: Certainly a unique experience. Great atmosphere and intelligent combat.
Cons: Showing the age of a four year dev cycle. Some may find it frustrating.
Conclusion: The world is in ruins; everything is covered with ash. Constant earthquakes and toxic dust storms continue to batter the city. Armed with only a flashlight, rope and an gun empty of bullets, our protagonist embarks on a quest for his family. Right from the start I Am Alive's oppressive atmosphere is clear. The world's a dreary, grey place. Everything is filtered through a coarse-grained, dusty viewpoint. There's hardly any colour.
Pros: + Great Atmosphere + Great gameplay + Sells you on a battle for survival.
Cons: - Very Linear -Somewhat short. - Atmospheric but monotonous visuals.
