Conclusion: In terms of price it is priced I believe at 800 and whether or not this is a good price will depend on your view of the game, In some ways I believe it to be worth 800 and in other ways I don’t. However if it goes on DOTW for 400 then I would definitely recommend giving this game a go as it gives a good 7-8 hour break. Out of 5 stars? I’d probably give it a 3 or a 3.5 give or take a few points.
Conclusion: Unfortunately, the single player only campaign makes a poor attempt to be something more and fails. If the campaign had been made more in the vein of the co-op experience (or even included co-op play at all), the game would have been better for it. Instead, the campaign is boring, survival mode is insufficient with only 3 maps, and co-op, while fun, feels too much like an after-thought. However, I don’t see any reason not to recommend Alien Breed 2.
Excerpt: I wonder how many people actually remember the original Alien Breed. I do. I had a copy of it way back in the early 90′s on the Amiga along with other Team 17 classics such as Worms and Body Blows. I was 12 at the time and spent most of my time running around blowing up aliens. It didn’t matter to me what the plot was.
Conclusion: All in all Alien Breed 2 is a great game. Fantastic in many respects, but it just doesn’t feel like Team 17 have added a great deal more to it or advanced the experience above the first. In fact if you have the first game then you really don’t need this, unless you care about the narrative progression. However if you don’t have Alien Breed : Impact and fancy seeing what all the old timers are talking about you could do a lot worse than picking this game up.
Summary: Atmosphere is what will sell Alien Breed 2: Assault more than anything else. The tense feeling of stumbling around in the dark with only 50 bullets left and two switches to still find really gets the adrenaline pumping. The co-op also adds a extra sprinkle of genius by allowing both you and a friend to mess their pants and scream like ten year old girls when you get locked into a room full of aliens and no health kits.
Conclusion: Overall, Alien Breed 2 is an excellent example of how to create the perfect top-down shooter. There’s plot, pace and a plethora of relentless enemies. You’re dashing from waypoint to waypoint, killing any foes in your way, but it never truly feels repetitive as it’s far too fun. Much like the way an arcade shooter milks your money from you despite the linearity of its gameplay, this run-and-gun grabs your attention with high-octane action and some pretty visuals.
