Summary: I got a pair of AV40 that says "latest version". The features are great, price was ok, but it sounded terrible. There was this "boxy" mids and "tinny" highs that drives me up the wall. After 2 days I couldn't stand it any more. Armed with a lot of experience building speaker boxes in my past, I removed the back of the speakers and added sound absorbing material.
Summary: These speakers sounded great after a small break in period. Stage was pretty good, high frequencies were clear but not to bright/crisp and the bass had a good presence without being overwhelming. Unfortunately mine developed a crackling/static noise after only 8 months of use. This crackling noise is more audible as you increase volume and it's heard whether they are connected to a input or not.
Summary: Two years ago, when I bought these speakers (after much research), I couldn't have been more delighted. They were for my desktop computer, but that's where I listen to a lot of music when I work--everything from classical chamber music to Verdi operas to the Ty Segal and the Mekons. The bass was plenty for my needs, the highs made me tingle. I never used them to fill the room at a party--that wasn't the intention.
Pros: Precise, accurate on orchestral instrumental sounds. No distortion but somewhat weak on base as would be expected with a two unit system.
Cons: After three years, left speaker failed. Based on other reviewers, this is not an isolated problem. It is difficult to find a speaker in this price range that has its qualities, but I will not purchase this brand again.
Summary: Length:: 1:01 Mins These speakers were fine first few months, then i started to notice a buzzing. see my video. The speakers were only plugged into the power outlet, nothing was plugged into it. So it's not the fault of anything other than the speakers. I do hear it less when i have something playing over it, but it's annoying to know I'm not getting crisp pure music.
Summary: They worked great for a couple months . I had a set before of the predecessor that had a left speaker problem. I was hoping these wouldn't do the same thing. Only the right one works. It seems to be a common problem. If you only need one speaker then these are fantastic.
Summary: Everyone! Be careful when purchasing these! I just found out that they are only for 110v! Even the pictures are misleading. I wouldn't care much but such a cheap trick I was not expecting. I am not sure who's fault it is but I claimed compensation. Now I am stuck with pair of 110v only speakers. Also, there is no BASS!!! Period! I know it's 4" driver but there is a lot of room for BASS!!! If you are using an equalizer you are okay.
Summary: The sound is fantastic - if you can get the wires to communicate properly to the speakers. I just opened the package and was excited to test it out - only to have to fiddle with the wires to get both speakers to sound properly. I have to pull them in & out several times to get them to connect.
Summary: Loss of Sound/Amp Power Issues: I would like to avoid a lengthy treatment of the AV 40 speakers. There are plenty of helpful reviews on the positive aspects of this affordable speaker set. Instead I will simply point you to the M-Audio Forums, under the heading Studio Gear/Live Sound then click on Speakers, Headphones and Earphones. To be a bit more precise you may want to enter the search term "AV40.
