Summary: My Z-5500 died a few years ago and I attempted to have it fixed but I was told that the control pod was the issue. It was great to find that replacement pods are available. It works just like the original. Just plug it in the D-SUB connector and turn on the power. Advice to buyers - take important note of the PID of your current unit and make sure that it falls in the range of compatible PIDs stated in the product description.
What you need if your Z-5500 control pod is "Kaput!"

Summary: It was odd "reviewing" this... as it's a replacement part for a larger system, and thus it's sort of strange, trying to not review the top-level system along with the replacement component. So... let's do both. The Logitech Z-5500 speaker system is a TERRIFIC 5.1 speaker system, providing outstanding "computer-focused" surround sound for games and in-office-media-playback. However, it has a few design defects and quality issues.
Summary: My original control unit for a Z5500 speaker let it's smoke out a few months ago and was dead after about 5 years service. Since the speakers are no longer produced I expected that I would have a hard time finding a replacement control unit. Doing an on-line search turned up a lot of used parts most of which were non-functional but also turned up this seller who apparently has a stock of new replacement control units for the Z5500. So I ordered one.
Summary: If you care about your sound quality, the richness of the deeps and the pureness of the highs and the fullness of the mids then this is the system you want! Retail it is about $420.00 US. For the money it may sound a bit much, but the sound quality is very near to BOSE quality and the functionality is very logical and simple!
Excellent for games and movies, not the best for music

Summary: A very amazing surround sound system for games and movies. However, for more critical listening such as music playback or recording, this set up is not ideal. With movies and games, the audio is moving around so much that speaker location is not overly important. With music playback, all 6 speakers need to each be in their own perfect "sweet spot".
High quality! great system! loud and with good quality!

Summary: Yea, this is a great speaker system, goes very very loud, and still I never got to peak it, the Bass is very deep, and works perfectly at those intense moments. I use this for movies, Games, and Computer. with a high quality set up, everything just works very well, nothing can compare! good mount, the wires could be longer for the rear speakers, but that is it. everything works great!
Summary: After the most recent round of price drops, I bought these speakers to replace the budget Z 680 set I've been using since college. I have found the Z 5500 set to be a great value for the money...not exactly top-of-the-line in performance, but they are both good enough and versatile enough to meet many diverse needs. * * * PREAMBLE I should probably qualify my statements by explaining my rather unique situation.
