Reviews and Problems with Harman Kardon SoundSticks II 2.1

Look cool, average performance for music, sufficient for tv or gaming.

Summary: These look very cool but I was a little disappointed with performance. They sound hollow and a bit muted. I owned a set of altec lansing computer speakers about 8 years in a similar price range ago and they sounded far better than these.. I guess I should go and get myself some large quality speakers! These sound okay if you just want to watch movies on your laptop or desktop though. I do love the way they look though.
Summary: It is simple: They sound great if you like clear sound and not an overload of bass. Most audiophiles would like them. If you like more boombox style bass then you need something else. They look great and the satelites do not take up much space, I put a premium on that. The controls are a disaster. The sub adjustment is in the rear and the satelite controls look great but are hardly usable.
Not as great as they're hyped up to be, especially for $100

Summary: I was really excited about these speakers, mostly due to the rave reviews. However, now that I have them on my desk I am certainly underwhelmed. The comments about lack of midrange are right on. The bass is nice, treble is nice, but it's very thin through the midrange. They sort of sound like they're two different sets of speakers, one all bass, and one all treble. It's quite distracting. They also have a very directional sound.
Summary: I have two sets of soundsticks and have found that the volumn cannot be turned up loud enough on one set. The other set works and sounds fine. I've had both about 3 years and now the one set that has been working great is now full of static on the sub and one of the two desk top speakers. Keep in mind that there is no on/off control for the sub woofer. Quality control could be improved from the factory. You may or may not get a great and loud speaker system.
Summary: To begin, I mean in no way for this review to be negative, simply take it for face value and understand that there are many other satisfied people. I am somewhat of an audiophile and have invested good sums of money in quality musical and audio equiptment. During the time of my purchase I was in the market for a small set of studio monitors because they provide very clear and defined sound, the problem is that for me to have the setup I wanted it would cost about 1000$...
Summary: The Soundsticks look nice and complement my new Mac Mini well. But they don't look quite as nice as the well-lit picture. The beads in the satellites aren't sky-blue like in the picture either. Mine are more of a dark-purple, which aren't as attractive. Sound-wise, the satellites sound good. The subwoofer however, is a little lacking. For music where the melody is carried by the bass, these speakers won't do a good job at reproducing the sound.
Temporary mid-priced option while you save up for a Bose alternative

Excerpt: THE BASICS Comprise a three piece speaker system (one subwoofer and two satellite 'soundsticks') specifically designed for use with Macs and iPods, though suitable for use via a mini stereo jack connection with any PC or audio system. It retails at around £99.99. THE LOOK The subwoofer is a shiny transparent plastic dome with a 24cm diameter, which is illuminated with bright blue lighting.
