You have got to be kidding if you say these speakers sound great out of the box! There's an obvious peak in the upper midrange. The shrillness in sound is enough to make anyone cry. And what's worse- the sound the subwoofer and the sattelites produce are extremely north and south- with nothing in between. Yes there is a huge gap- all you hear is bass and upper midrange shrillness.

Now all that changes with the use of a simple tool- a graphic equalizer.

I am an audiophile and have had years of experience with speakers. And I KNOW if a speaker set has the potential to sound remarkable (meaning as close as possible to the original sound) or not. And luckilly my friends, the Creative T3100 is one of those potentially gifted speakers.

A full day of tweaking the equalizer and speaker placement magically transformed this cheap set into jewels I am so amazed with. The sub and the sattelites now blend seamlessly, as if you're listening to normal sized bookshelf speakers with 8 inch woofers! No more annoying gap in the entire frequency range! And no more of that shoutiness in the upper midrange area.

I listened to a variety of music using my reference Telarc, Chesky and Shanachie CDs and I am proud to say that these speakers CAN deliver acceptable quality to please an audiophile.

Would I recommend these? Certainly! But only to those who have the patience in toying around with speaker placement (critical!) and using tools such as an equalizer (a no-no to audiophile purists- but what the heck- it's a PC/ MP3 speaker set!) to flatten the out-of-the-box jagged and annoying frequency response.

If properly tuned, listening to them you'll be hard pressed in guessing which are the Creative T3100s and a set of more costly England made B&W monitors (of course the B&Ws sound richer, fuller and more honest). This is no exaggeration, but an honest surprise to my myself and some friends who have autitioned the T3100. Bravo Creative!
