Unnatural Sound Quality.

John T., Crutchfield
21 May 2012
  • Summary: I have been using these Bose speakers on my imac for over 3 years now and I must say that with DVD movies they sound great but when reproducing music they sound horrible. I can hear no difference between lossy mp3 and lossless flac files on the Bose. However when I play back those same music files on high quality stereo speakers, I hear everything that is wrong with compressed music like mp3.
  • Pros: Sound good with Home Theater
  • Cons: Terrible with music. Poorly built. Overpriced.

Problems with Vista

Jman, TigerDirect.com
16 October 2009
  • Summary: At first I was very impressed but quickly started running into problems. The speakers would simply stop working for no reason. Did a quick google and found many people were having the same problem and it appears to be an issue with Vista. Others have tried to contact Bose and Microsoft and they simply point fingers at each other with no resolution. I am always needing to unplug the USB cable, wait, and then plug it back in.

Another naysayer

Robert L. Hiner, Amazon
26 January 2009
  • Summary: Sales people in large appliance stores invariably represent Bose equipment as the best, "if you can afford it." And among computer speaker systems, they say Companion 5 is the one. Well, at $399, most of us need more than brand recognition and manufacturer hype--the sales person's stock and trade. We want to know what C5 owners think. Was the money worth it? There are plenty of rave reviews on Amazon.

"Great speakers...does not work"

Ajay_J, CNET
14 December 2008
  • Pros: I am a big fan of Bose. But these speakers suck. I have Vista Business. Suddenly, the sound stops working. The speakers are great when they do work.
  • Cons: Bad technological creation by Bose. For a company that puts in so much research with MIT, I am shocked that they dont even pre test their systems with Vista OS, which is probably the most used.

User Review

  • Summary: these are the worst speakers ever. I had loads of trouble..they would crackle and then eventually just shut off. I finally got to the bottom of it and they are NOT compatible with vista. So if you are running vista dont buy them.

"VERY disappointing."

Fredolow, CNET
24 September 2008
  • Pros: Small footprint, compact and neat design. The hand control is a 'nice-to-have', but that's about it
  • Cons: Terrible sound quality. I own other Bose products and have generally been very happy, but these speakers are well down the ladder. There appears to be absolutely no mid-range at all. All tinny treble and thumping base. Buyer beware!

Damaged

Pawel, Amazon
20 May 2014
  • Summary: Absolutely not recommending it to anyone, not even an enemy. Worked fine for a day, than next day volume control completely stopped working. I've managed to get it working by turning off the system for a minute using the switch on the sub, than after a week it happened again, even the speakers stopped working. I hate it.

Short Life Span

GC, FutureShop
17 December 2010
  • Summary: With new MacBook Pro's; forget it. Aside from that, as usual with Bose, they don't last very long in terms of quality. After 6 months, I had to replace them. Fortunately, you'll get much better sound quality for a much better price from Altec Lansing and they'll last you longer. Also, Bose can't handle higher levels of volume, where they simply fall apart.
