Doesn't Last!

Eric M, Amazon
18 January 2011
  • Summary: I had this for about a year now and only one speaker works, they aren't blown but the connection is shot. For the price its not worth it for only having it a short time.

Don't be fooled

Evan C., Newegg
20 March 2010
  • Summary: Do yourself a favor, and don't buy these speakers. i had thought that Altec Lansing was a reputable company with good products, but i guess not. You would be better off buying from a brand like sony, cyber acoustics, and if you can afford it buy bose.
  • Pros: -Plenty loud -space saving design
  • Cons: The problem with these speakers is that the bass in the subwoofer is WAY too overpowering for the very tiny drivers in the desktop speakers. When you go to turn the bass down, it creates a loud and obnoxious humming sound.

Terrible units

Matthew C., Newegg
12 February 2010
  • Pros: Comes in black.
  • Cons: Sub-woofer unit has annoying low-level hum at all levels. Midrange/high units don't sit flat on a desk, and are prone to wobble. The angle of tweeter units cannot be adjusted. I really wanted to buy another unit of a previous Altec-Lansing model (# VS4221), which is no longer available (and is an...

THESE HUM BAD!

Robert C., Newegg
6 October 2009
  • Summary: Ended up ordering RAZER Mako 2.1 speakers. I'm replacing my 10 year old 60W SDTA Multimedia speakers (generic) which still work. Based on reviews (and previous experience) Logitech equipment has a low production quality and are defect prone.
  • Pros: The speakers look very nice and the controls are conveniently located
  • Cons: I had to return these speakers because they hum really bad. The sub-woofer lacks a grounding plug so line distortion causes bad low-frequency noise. Additionally, they lacked mid-range tones and bass sounded excessively muddled (turned down bass knob to about 25%).

Dung

Jacob F., Newegg
2 July 2009
  • Summary: I've owned three of these things in the past few years and had the same problem with all of them. So it's obviously not bad luck, but it is bad design.
  • Pros: They sound good when they work...
  • Cons: The Auxiliary cable that comes with the speaker is flawed, you will need to replace it after a few months because your left or right channel wont work unless you fiddle around with it. Whenever you touch the volume knob (and I mean touch, you don't even need to move it) it gets extremely loud due...

Horrible humming from sub

Brent C., Newegg
18 May 2009
  • Summary: My case might be worse because I have a UPS on the same outlet that could be adding harmonics to the AC. However, when I went to the local brick and morter to buy my new speakers, I checked the VS4121's out on display, and I could hear the hum at the subwoofer.
  • Pros: Looks great. Nice Satellites
  • Cons: Subwoofer emits a horrible continuous "hum" when the speakers are on. Didn't notice it right away, and made the mistake of throwing away the boxes. Hum isn't bad when playing music, because the music quickly drowns out the hum. But if just working at the computer, it slowly drives you insane! Als...

DO NOT buy these speakers!!

Robert E., Newegg
5 May 2009
  • Summary: Since this model has a known manufacturing deficiency...I have made a recommendation to NewEgg that they discontinue this particular product. Buyer beware!!
  • Pros: For 2.1 computer speakers at $65 and free shipping, the design is good and sound quality is decent. I gave it 1 star for design effort, but the flaws with this product are keeping it from achieving a 4 star rating.
  • Cons: There is a known manufacturing flaw with these speakers in the ground loop circuitry. Eventually (if not immediately) the subwoofer and satellite speakers begin to emit a very noticeable low frequency hum/buzz. Altec Lansing blames this on AC power that alternates at a 60Hz frequency - which pret...

Ungrounded Junk Sub

Collin H., Newegg
18 March 2009
  • Summary: Looks like the box was opened and had been packaged by somebody else like me.
  • Pros: Carries Altec's name, but not their quality. Newegg didn't charge a restocking fee, and paid for the return shipping (after doing online chat).
  • Cons: Hooked the system up, sounded good. Went to bed later that night, and I could hear the buzzing from the sub 20 feet away. The sub was emmitting the buzz. I unhooked the 1/8 stereo mini from the computer, still buzzed. My previous speakers worked fine, so the PC was good. Read other reviews, and s...
