Summary: As many other reviewers have reported the same, the subwoofer began to emit a constant loud humming noise even when all input wires are disconnected. I purchased the system new on Amazon on Nov 1, 2012. Today is Sept 10, 2013. The product is supposed to be warrantied for 1 year. The seller was Firemall and the fulfillment was by Amazon with 2 day Amazon Prime service.
Summary: I wish there was a "zero" star option. These speakers worked fine out of the box. They just started buzzing after 5 hours of use. The buzzing stopped if you turned off the speakers for a few hours, but they were back in no time after use resumed. Apparently this is a common problem for these speakers. STAY AWAY. There are many other good options. Setting aside the awful buzzing, which is a deal killer in and of itself obviously, the speakers are poorly designed.
Stay away -- Altec will not honor warranty when bought from Amazon

Summary: Shame on Amazon for selling a product with no warranty. My cable broke, I wrote to Altec. Here is what I got: Barb L, Jan 29 01:18 pm (EST): Hi Wenigr, Our Warranty Coverage is detailed below. All requested documents are required and mandatory for replacement of any potentially defective product. Failure to meet any of the requirements will result in a warranty not being honored. There are absolutely “NO EXCEPTIONS” made.
Summary: I received the Altec Lansing set about a week ago. My right speaker now has so much static it makes listening to music aggravating. I'm returning it as soon as I receive my new set (I ordered ). I was shocked by the packaging - A small box contained in a large box. Within the small box were the speakers and subwoofer, only held in place by a piece of formed cardboard. I had some difficulty with the initial setup. The instructions are not helpful.
Summary: I use these speakers quite lightly, light music while working, NPR streaming radio, some web videos, no cranked dubstep here. The right speaker has been blown for some time, it rattles and crackles just playing a voice or a little bit of bass, really annoying. Planning to replace them soon, will get something else. Probably a discrete amp and some real bookshelf speakers.
Summary: The first couple months I had these speakers they worked very well. It had nice quality sound and nice bass. It was very easy to setup and I was glad I didn't have to twist any wires together since everything just needed to be plugged in to the wall and to my comp from the bass. It also had a power button on the back of the bass which was nice. The design of the speakers were also very appealing. Those are just about the only good things with these speakers.
Summary: At first this little speaker system produced surprisingly good sound quality. Shortly after however, the bass simply stopped working. I tried plugging it into different ports, software upgrade, nothing worked. So, now they sound really bad since no base comes out of the two desktop speakers. Near useless.
Summary: Purchased this because a previous Altec Lansing 2.1 system I use works great. But it appears Altec's quality control is in the hole. Returned this system and now looking for another solution. Not happy, except that Amazon took it back and gave me credit toward a future purchase.
