Summary: I loved these speakers as soon as I took them out of the box. Mid and treble sounds are great. I had these at my desk for four years and they've taken quite a beating and still sound good. However, as other reviewers have noted, the overbearing bass can be a major detractor. After turning the equalizer all the way down and finding that the bass still overpowered the satellite speakers I started tweaking the system.
Summary: Great speakers. Awesome price. However, the subwoofer has no volume control, which can make it overbearing or weak, depeneding on what's being played. Also, the subwoofer is weak on the really low notes. However, this would be the first system I'd recommend for anyone on a budget.
Summary: These speakers I must admitt do have good sattelites for there price but I dont know what you people are talking about when you say good bass. My little sister bought a pair of Creative I300 speakers and they have ALOT more bass than these. Also these things do have a bass control right in the back of the sub unless I got a older model. Well I did buy these speakers used so maybe thats why they dont have the bass you are all talking about maybe they were abused.
Summary: The satelite speakers sound great and have great treble. Although the sub pumps out sweet bass for the price, there is no onboard bass control (which makes the bass overpower the satelites with some audio sources that do not have an equalizer). One way to fix the bass problem is to do as I did.
Summary: These speakers are cool-looking, with a subwoofer that is small but capable, and a simple design. There is a outlet for headphones, and color-coded wires. Sound quality is good for its price, but it depends more on the sound card and the quality of music being listened to. The volume can get pretty high, and is sensitive. Games were not that great because of the lack of additional satellites, so surround sound was OK.
Summary: Although I am kind of disappointed that Altec did not include a bass volume control with these speakers I am satisfied with their performance. If your primary application for using these speakers has an equalizer you should be able to tone down the bass to an acceptable level. If you are not using an equalizer buy the Altec AVS300LA 3PC 10W 220V SPEAKER ( AVS300LA ) which has a bass volume control and sounds good for half the price.
Summary: I just received my Altec Lansing 221 Speaker System. Im pretty impressed. The sub has no bass control but thats not a problem if you use any one of the current media players. The sound is pretty awesome considering the size of the speakers. And they look very sleek as well. If your looking to spend under $50 but want big bass and clear treble, this is the system for you. Im proud with my purchase. The cool thing about this is that their amplified.
Summary: I just bought these speakers replacing my puny speakers, and having a few kids cant afford a nice bose system. The bass is a little much but I dont mind that at all. The speakers sound great though. I am 100% happy with my purchase and my wallet is too. On a tight budget Id definatly recommend these speakers.
Summary: These speakers are inexpensive, compact, good looking, easy to install, and most importantly-they sound good. Others have complained that the bass is too loud, but you can easily adjust this from your sound software. You don't need a bass switch on the subwoofer and I for one would gladly give up such a redundant feature to save some money.
