Summary: I've been using PS since ver 1.0 and have always felt it was the gold standard for graphics processing, and application interface in general. This latest version is the first time I feel they have taken a step back. Its a lemon. The marquee tool doesn't not work right anymore.
Pros: Its Photoshop, its peerless in image processing, still no question. CS4 has a bunch of new animated ways to drag around, it looks cooler than CS3, just too bad it doesn't work better.
Cons: Its clunky, interface is flawed, marquee tool, guides, are imperfect, overall interface is buggy, feels like beta software. On some machines it is flat out unusable without turning off features and changing GPU settings.
Summary: I phoned Adobe support and explained the situation (I had obtained Photoshop CS3 Extended through a student license as that was the only version available to students) and they were really great.
Pros: Photoshop CS4 has been reviewed everywhere else in detail. On a powerful computer it performs beautifully. The new ability for dedicated use of the GPU makes working with images even easier. It is also now a 64-bit application. Working great with Windows 7 64-bit.
Cons: Be careful of what "upgrade paths" are considered to be valid by Adobe. They are all clearly specified on their site. I owned a copy of Photoshop CS3 Extended and assumed that I could upgrade to Photoshop CS4 with no difficulty. However, the CS4 installation did not recognize my CS3 serial number...
Pros: There is absolutely no doubt that this software is excellent and has a lot of capabilities. It is probably worth the price.
Cons: For some reason, I have had issues with it locking up. I just get a hand and can't click on anything for a while. It goes away in a minute or two, but this is not a good thing to have happen with your $700 piece of software. This is really the only flaw that I have detected whilst using it though.
Summary: To the prior reviewer who said you can only upgrade from a single license of Adobe CS, CS2 and CS3. What did you think this would upgrade? This is a case of someone NOT doing their due diligence in terms of research. Adobe makes it very clear what this will upgrade.
Pros: This is the only game in town when it comes to photo editing.
Summary: Adobe doesn't need your business, and they'll tell you as much. Don't trust their upgrade policy online. Call their customer service and ASK (for the record) which product you can upgrade from. THIS PRODUCT WILL ONLY UPGRADE FROM A SINGLE LICENSE FOR ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS,CS2, CS3 --NOTHING ELSE...
Pros: Very well-engineered, stable, & substantial product. Industry standard (of course).
Cons: Words that come to mind about Adobe in general: Monopoly, Anti-trust, Extortion, Lousy Customer Service, Vague Upgrade Policy, Punitive, and Ambivalent.
The only thing letting it down is the price (and the lack of support for .ico files)

Excerpt: Photoshop has been an industry-standard graphics editing program for as long as I can remember. It's kind of like the iPhone of the software industry...although there are no 'killers' that come anywhere close to being as good. Photoshop, despite its name, isn't just for photos.
