Excerpt: War shooting games have always been a popular type with gamers everywhere, and after supplying consumers with loads of World War 2 games, developers began switching things up and coming out with games based on the Vietnam War, but results were not what they had hoped.
Excerpt: Vietcong 2 is the sequel to the Pterodon's Vietcong, a first-person shooter set in the Vietnam War. It's success lead to this sequel, and while the setting has moved (from the jungle to the urban jungle) the gameplay remains pretty similar to the original game.
Excerpt: Vietcong 2, an introduction. Just over two and a half years ago we reviewed Vietcong, a war based FPS that focused on the war in Vietnam rather than the tried and tested World War II scenario. With this change of scene came a few changes.
Excerpt: The past few years has seen a number of Vietnam themed shooters come out (including Battlefield Vietnam, Men of Valor, ShellShock and more), but most of them have been unable to rise to the occasion and be the definitive ‘Nam themed game.
Excerpt: Vietcong 2 puts gamers into the Vietnam War and allows them to play either American or Vietcong forces. Solid gameplay and nice production values make Vietcong a decent title, but a completely stock story and some boneheaded AI prevent it from standing out.
Pros: ups: Nice visuals and audio; doesn't take the easy gruesome route.
Cons: downs: Another war game; weird political message out of nowhere; dumb AI; pretty ho-hum story.
Excerpt: Vietcong 2 is set against the turbulent backdrop of the 1968 Tet Offensive and throws gamers into the ancient city of Hue during the Vietnam War. Once again, developers Pterodon, manage to capture the feel and look of the 1960's with not only an engaging storyline but also some sturdy gameplay.
Conclusion: Vietcong 2 is a good game there is no doubt about that, but sadly there has been a lot of good war games in recent years so companies must strive to be great in order to make a war game that cuts the mustard these days.
