Trine

Trine is a physics-based action game developed by Frozenbyte, Inc, and published by Nobilis in which gamers assume the role of one of three characters that is put to task to find solutions to challenges created by hazardous puzzles and threatening enemies. The gameplay is based on fully interactive physics where each character’s different abilities and tactics can be used to invent new ways to overcome obstacles and save the kingdom. It is a fantasy action game where the player can create and use physics-based objects to beat hazardous puzzles and threatening enemies. The game is set in a world of castles and strange machinery, with three characters (The Knight, the Thief and the Wizard) bound to a mysterious device called the Trine going on a quest to save the kingdom from evil. Each character has different abilitues that helps the player battle an army of un-dead and defeat hazardous contraptions. Gamers can switch between the three characters as they see fit to take up the challenge or the puzzle. The Wizard has the ability to summon objects to help solve puzzles and create new ways to overcome obstacles, the Thief uses agility and dead-on accuracy and the Warrior unleashes mayhem and physical destruction.

Features

The game features 3 different characters: The Knight (Pontius) yearns to join the King’s army and do battle against the undead to prove himself worthy of knighthood. The character has an arsenal of melee weapons, the ability to lift heavy objects and throwing them onto the enemies. Pontius also has a shield that he can use to block attacks. The Thief (Zoya) is skilled in archery and has abilities in ranged attack which is useful for hitting enemies at a longer distance. She also carries a rope that she can attach to wooden surfaces, swing herself over ledges and climb upwards or descend with the rope. The Wizard (Amadeus) has the ability to summon various objects into the world which act just like real objects would. He also has the ability to levitate objects and can cast new objects in larger quantities. Trine requires a system with the following requirements: Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 operating system, 2.0 GHz CPU (Dual-core recommended) processor; 512MB (XP)/1GB (Vista) memory, Radeon X800 or GeForce 6800 or better graphics controller with DirectX®: 9.0c support; 600 MB HDD space, DirectX compatible soundcard and Gamepads required for co-op play (multi-player).

Trine is undoubtedly beautiful, and that beauty will draw you in from beginning to end. The visual magic doesn't translate into equally superb gameplay, though the action and platforming are smooth and rewarding on their own--a few minor rough patches aside. There are reasons to return after your initial five-hour play-through, including hidden secrets and, of course, terrific cooperative action, which makes the $19.99 price easy to swallow. Trine is a fun and beautiful... Read more

We haven't given this game a higher score simply because it's over too damn quickly, which isn't what gamers will be expecting for a steep price of $29.99 - that's if you're playing the PC version. The PS3 edition will cost 10 bucks less. That in turn makes the only major flaw of this game. Well, that coupled with the fact that there's a small assortment of enemies and very few boss fights to experience. Still, the picking up the occasional hidden treasure and loot, thus... Read more

The boss fights aren't as irritating as they should be. Those who know me know that I'm fond of making sweeping, completely over the top statements - generally filled with the kind of boyish enthusiasm you associate with, well, enthusiastic, over the top boys. Here comes one of those statements right now, look: If you ever, EVER, play a game as beautiful as this for the rest of your life, you'll have lived a truly remarkable existence. Read more

Though not very imaginative story-wise, Trine is a unique title from a gameplay perspective. In addition to having heaps of gorgeous art to look at, the game's chock-full of complex environmental puzzles that really give the brain cells a workout. The game's elegantly simple concept, fluid control scheme and high-quality graphics and sound—not to mention it's $19.99 price tag make buying it a no-brainer. Read more

So there you have it, Trine is a small diamond of a game. It’s fun, entertaining, challenging and most important, it doesn’t pretend to be anything other than it actually is. Except for the multiplayer, there isn’t anything to dislike. If you like those flash games that use physics, you will love this. There were a few small glitches at first, but nothing a small patch couldn’t fix. One might be worried about the length of the game, but then again, it only costs... Read more

I haven't played a platformer in well over 10 years. I was intrigued by the game idea, using 3 different switchable characters to get past physics based puzzles. Each character has their own strengths, and not only that, but you can use a different character to get past the same puzzle. For example, near the beginning, you can either use the wizard's magic to move a battle ram to destroy a door blocking the path, or have the knight use his sword and hit it multiple... Read more

Bought this game when it was on sale. I just got around to playing it and it is pure eye candy. It's amazing what they've done with this side-scroller. It has a totally 3D feel to it. Like a commentor mentioned, it plays very much like the old Vikings game that I think Blizzard made, but looks a lot slicker. The physics are fantastic and the detail to the backgrounds and the movement of the objects/characters astound me. I wish they provided a way to screen capture each... Read more
