Review: The Secret World (PC)

GameAxis
11 October 2012
  • Excerpt: With no classes, no levels and no high fantasy setting, The Secret World was something that looked set to stir things up in the MMORPG cauldron. While the MMORPG is a genre I have little time for now, Funcom promised this would be special. And special it really is.

  • Excerpt: Have you ever played a game that you wanted desperately to like, yet you knew was inherently flawed? That’s how I felt playing Funcom’s The Secret World – for the past month or so, I’ve desperately tried to find redeeming qualities for this game.

Expert Review

  • Summary: It seems like I’ve been on a bit of an MMO kick lately.  Earlier this year I previewed hit the site.  I enjoyed both of those games quite a bit.  Not too long after playing Tera though, I got the opportunity to review The Secret World, so I figured “why not”.

The Secret World review

GamesRadar
12 September 2012
  • Excerpt: World of Warcraft launched eight years ago, and MMORPGs still don't know what to do with themselves. It's no longer enough to just clone WoW, if it ever was, and the genre's massive shift toward a free-to-play revenue model has developers scrambling to reinvent yesterday's premium games as...
  • Pros: Original world-building, fun writing, Tons of valid build possibilities, Promise of long-term updates
  • Cons: Flimsy, unsatisfying combat, Repetition kills the fun factor, Some free-to-play titles execute better

The Secret World Gaming and Performance Review

Hi Tech Legion
20 August 2012
  • Summary: In my opinion, one of the greatest MMORPG games was the original release of Star Wars Galaxies, not World of Warcraft. • Summary: Guns and swords and magic, oh my!
  • Pros: Interesting world real world setting, no set classes for characters, lots of abilities to support your journey through the world.
  • Cons: Sometimes too many abilities to support your journey through the world, some glitches and problems with quest execution, long lines to get into two out of three PVP arenas, some awkward animations.

  • Excerpt: I have a real fear of playing massively multiplayer online games. From what I’ve heard and seen is that they have a real ability to turn your life-upside down and tap away at your free time until you have nothing left.

  • Conclusion: I can’t say whether you should pay a subscription for The Secret World , but if you do despite some quibbles of mine this is a world you will enjoy being part of. Albeit not a very secret one though.
