Excerpt: The Blackwell Legacy is the first game in the Blackwell series from Wadjet Eye Games, an indie game development company founded by Dave Gilbert in 2006. The game is actually based on a freeware game released previously by Gilbert called Bestowers of Eternity. For the game, Gilbert has crafted an unusual and brilliant story about ghosts and mediums.
Excerpt: The adventure game genre is one that you have to approach knowing that you like it. It's not exactly like the platformer, FPS, or action-adventure genres where you may not necessarily play those types of games but every so often a God of War or a Mario game will come along that you really get into. If you've never liked an adventure game before, it's almost a guarantee that you will never get into the genre.
Excerpt: Scattering her aunt’s ashes from the Brooklyn Bridge, Rosangela Blackwell reflects that she never really knew her aunt. She visited her aunt weekly for twenty-five years while her aunt lay incapacitated in a mental institution, but there was no communication between them. Still, it was the only family she had and now that small comfort is gone.
Conclusion: I wanted to love The Blackwell Legacy, but in the end I was only moderately impressed. Had the story been more compelling, I might have had more patience with the wordy and non-interactive way it is told. Still, this is certainly not a bad effort. Both the writing and the puzzles are of high quality, even if the balance between them is off.
