Excerpt: Black Mirror An Ominous Turn of Events… You see a dark foreboding castle, cloaked in darkness and the pouring rain. As lightening flashes and thunder rolls, we move towards a tower with candlelight shining through its windows. Entering the dim lit room, we see an old man come in, clutching a massive candlestick. He places his candlestick down upon an old roll top desk and takes up his pen. He is writing to his Grandson, Samuel Gordon.
Excerpt: In The Black Mirror , you take on the role of Samuel Gordon. When your grandfather mysteriously dies one night, you come back home to the Black Mirror manor for the funeral -- plus to find out what’s going on. Soon enough other people start to die, you begin experiencing severe headaches and bad dreams, and you learn that a curse was placed on your family over 500 years previously. The story of The Black Mirror works pretty well. In fact, it’s the best part of the game.
Conclusion: Wrap-Up: Black Mirror isn’t the best-crafted adventure game or a well-crafted one either. Despite its old school approach and flaws, the story’s ok and worth seeing through till the end (especially with the work it takes to get there. Retailing now under the price tag of $15-$20 dollars, you can get your money’s worth out of it.
Conclusion: All in all, this is a good game, but not a great one. It has a lot of promise, but just doesn’t pull through to become what it could have been. It’s a murder mystery with a twist everyone will see coming from a mile away, and the puzzles and slowness don’t do it any service. This could have been a classic, but unfortunately is a game that will sit on my shelf waiting for the occasional replay.
Summary: Here’s a hint to all adventure game designers out there: When you’re making a game in a genre that relies heavily on good voice acting, well-written dialogue, and strong plot, be completely certain that you actually produce a game with good voice acting, well-written dialogue, and a strong plot. Puzzles alone do not an adventure game make.
Excerpt: My mind must’ve been wandering. For some reason, it’s very difficult for me to concentrate on any form of steady conversation after playing an adventure game of any type. Anyone who’s played one knows the art of patience that goes into the meandering quests of discovery, usually rooted in different screen locations (commonly less than fifteen in number at any given time), and the trenches of wear eroded by the main character’s boots as they walk from place to place and...
Summary: Good voice acting can bring a game's characters to life or at the very least make a flat story seem a little livelier. As vital as it is, voice acting still seems to be an afterthought in many games. For some games, it seems like the hiring criteria are merely that the actors can speak English and can stay awake through the recording sessions.
