Expert Review

Game Freaks 365
30 December 2009
  • Excerpt: The Monkey Island franchise has been around for nearly twenty years. This 1990 hit from LucasArts spawned four sequels through 2000, when Escape from Monkey Island was released on PC and later on the PS2. That was the last we heard from Guybrush Threepwood, LeChuck and the rest of the characters in the Monkey Island series. That is, until now. TellTale Games has picked up where LucasArts left off with a new, revamped series of episodic games.

  • Excerpt: Guybrush Threepwood is back! Your enjoyment of Tales of Monkey Island: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal will probably depend a lot on your emotional response to that statement. If your heart skipped a beat or you are currently pumping your fists in the air, then you'll probably enjoy Tales of Monkey Island based primarily on your adoration of the classic Monkey Island games that hit PCs almost twenty years ago.

Tales of Monkey Island: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal (PC)

  • Excerpt: The ones who have fond memories of learning how to do insult swordfighting will be happy to know that your fond memories are not trampled underfoot by Telltale’s new Tales of Monkey Island series. At least not by the first episode, The Launch of the Screaming Narwhal, which does not feature insult swordfighting.

Tales of Monkey Island Chapter 1: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal

Video Game Generation
15 August 2009
  • Summary: Along with the LucasArts re-release The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition , Guybrush Threepwood and company would seem to once again have a bright future of pirating and plundering ahead of them. Tales of Monkey Island Chapter One: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal is a good start to what should be a rollicking five chapter adventure on the high seas.
  • Pros: The graphics are typical Telltale, bright and appealing without being too cute., Plenty of puzzles and obstacles to keep players busy, without ever becoming frustrating., Tales of Monkey Island, feels like a natural extension to the franchise, and not a reboot. Players new to the franchise (like me) can jump right in without feeling lost, and returning fans will find plenty of in-jokes.
  • Cons: The jungle is a bit confusing and could use a few more landmarks., As the first chapter, the storyline is pretty straightforward.

Tales of Monkey Island: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal (PC) - Review

VGChartz
20 July 2009
  • Excerpt: The Monkey Island series of point-and-click adventures has long been one of the most well-written comedy-based efforts in gaming. After a long hiatus, TellTale Games’ first of five chapters in the Tales of Monkey Island series proves that the series can still stick to its roots while keeping the jokes and gags relevant to the current times. In true game-villain form, the evil demon pirate LeChuck (or is he a zombie this time – a mummy?

Tales of Monkey Island: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal (Chapter One)

Digital Chumps
12 July 2009
  • Conclusion: I think that Telltale Games has a great thing going on when it comes to treating some LucasArts titles right. The second chapter of Sam and Max was good, the first chapter of Tales of Monkey Island is the same. I think with some slight improvements and some more balanced difficulty, this game will go down as one of the better Monkey Island tales. Overall, it still needs some work. It's not too far off though.

Tales of Monkey Island: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal

Thunderbolt Games
9 July 2009
  • Excerpt: If there’s only one thing we’ve learned over the years playing the Monkey Island games, it’s that there are two ways of doing things: the right way and the Guybrush Threepwood way. And if this latest episodic entry into the series is an indication, it’s a lesson that hasn’t diminished with time. This new tale kicks off with our hero ready to put an end to LeChuck as well as saving his beloved Elaine with the help of a voodoo-enchanted cutlass.
