The wife is laughing at me the whole time—she hadn't laughed this hard since she noticed the Dungeons and Dragons label on my Neverwinter Nights disk.

Star Wars: Empire at War Review

VideoGamer.com
22 April 2007
  • Excerpt: A long time ago (1837), in a galaxy far, far away (Denmark), an evil Sith Lord (Darth - sorry... Hans - Christian Anderson) wrote a tale called The Emperor's New Clothes. If you're not familiar with the story, it's about a vain ruler, obsessed with fine clothes, and more importantly, showing them off to his subjects. One day, two scoundrels decide to try and sell him a suit made of a material that appears invisible to those too stupid to see it.

Star Wars: Empire at War Review

Strategy Gaming Online
13 March 2006
  • Excerpt: There is a huge range of Star Wars games out in stores nowadays, and a pretty good majority of them are decidedly mediocre. While LucasArts has had good success in the RPG and action genres, they've had less-than-stellar results in trying to get various developers to make strategy games that really capture the feel of the movie battles. Star Wars: Empire at War from developer Petroglyph is their newest attempt.

Star Wars: Empire At War

AV Club
28 February 2006
  • Excerpt: Every Star Wars title makes a few awkward concessions to the movies—whether it's working in catchphrases like "I've got a bad feeling about this," or making room for powerful Jedi without letting them wipe every enemy off the screen. In Empire At War , the franchise's latest and definitely greatest real-time strategy game, the Empire chases down the Rebellion in the years leading up to the first Death Star.

Star Struck By Empire

GIN
27 February 2006
  • Excerpt: Created by ex-Westwood (Command & Conquer, Earth & Beyond, Dune II) and ex-Origin developers (Ultimas, Wing Commander), Star Wars Empire at War is definitely a LucasArt's portfolio piece. Hands down it is one of the better Star Wars games. From graphics and gameplay to audio and fun it has a polished feel that screams STAR WARS through and through. In fact, this is the RTS they have been trying to make for years now.

Star Wars: Empire at War Review

GameSpot
16 February 2006
  • Excerpt: The Star Wars franchise has seen its share of great action games, role-playing games, and space-combat simulators, but the strategy genre is something that, for some reason, has proved elusive for LucasArts to truly capture. The efforts to date, including Rebellion, Force Commander, and Galactic Battlegrounds, have ranged from poor to pretty good. Petroglyph's Empire at War is the game that's finally gotten the formula down just right.
  • Pros: Dual-layered design lets you think on both a strategic and a tactical level, Epic-looking battles, Sound effects are spot-on for what you'd expect from a Star Wars game, Rebellion and Empire offer contrasting play styles, Large array of heroes that have a real impact on gameplay
  • Cons: Can get a little repetitive, Land battles aren't as compelling as other aspects of the game
