Summary: I have purchased many EA products over the years. Unfortunately, the new SimCity was rushed to market. The consequence of rushing a product has been two patches that do not fix issues, a third patch was/is promised with an eta that has passed. No new promise date for the third patch. And EA has chutzpah to say they are going to bring to the marketplace an expansion pack without correcting what me and many other people are having problems.
Summary: I love both SimCity and The Sims, and have played both for years. The initial statement that the game was not like the original SimCity at all didn't bother me, as city-building games of all sorts are by far my favorites that I continue to play year after year. SimCity Societies was very disappointing however. Thankfully I did not run into the plethora of bugs and crashes that many others had.
Summary: Well, the graphics for the buildings were fun and a number of micro-management aspects of previous simcity games were simplified. However, you can finish a scenario in less than a day and the replayability is limited to choosing different societal themes to see how the cities evolve. I suppose you could set the difficulty level to hard which makes it more challenging to keep sims happy, but I'm not sure that would really raise the fun level.
Summary: This is one of those many games that are fun to play for awhile but definatley do not buy at full price. I did, on a whim, and frankly feel like the "fool" in that old line about who gets soon parted from their money. Visually and esthetically, the game is great. The graphics are beautiful, the animations are amusing. On the other hand, as others have noted, there is no point to this game. You just build and build, its like The Sims only at city level.
Summary: Let me preface this review by saying how much I've loved other Sim games, and how much I was looking forward to a new one. I've enjoyed many hours (days!) of game play on previous Sim City games, and The Sims. In response to B Dowling (the reviewer below), who comapred it unfavourably to Sim City but said that if you like The Sims, buy Societies: I disagree! Societies compares badly to Sim City 4, and it also compares badly to The Sims 2.
Summary: I have been an avid player of all the Sim City titles, so of course I bought this game at the first availability... Couldn't wait to get home and play it. Too bad it is such a disappointment. The building types are great, and the ability to angle the buildings.. but that's about it. The over all feel and play of this game is so not Sim City. After only an hour of game play it has become quite boring and feels more like a chore than an entertaining game.
The Sims TRY TO MOVE UP IN SOCIETY...ONLY TO BE RUN OUT OF TOWN!

Summary: This is what happens with a merger that is never given the chance to consolidate: no one gets what he expects. First of all, if you were expecting either SIMCITY 5 or THE SIMS 3 (or even the long lost SIMVILLE), this is not where to look: SC-SOCIETIES was developed not by MAXIS but by TILTED MILL (of CAESAR 4 fame) - but this in itself is neither good or bad. Definetely bad is where they decided to take both franchises though.
it can be very annoying when you're just trying to build a city to have it crash over, fun few mins

Excerpt: For people who love the Sims and haven't played Sim city much this is the perfect introduction to that sort of game. The game is based around the premise that you can make whatever society you want and the people living in the city will either be happy or not about it. You can, if you want, make it whatever you want and depending on the path you decide to take you end up unlocking different venues and buildings.
