Excerpt: Sherlock Holmes Vs Jack The Ripper The videogame world has been blessed through time with some truly remarkable and enjoyable ‘versus’ titles, from the inspired Capcom Vs. SNK to the chilling horror series Aliens Versus Predator (which receives another entry next month).
Pros: Sherlock Holmes is in it, As is Jack The Ripper, CSI sections
Cons: More linear than a line, Boring fetch quests, Illogical puzzles
Excerpt: Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper is fifth installment of the successful sleuthing franchise from Frogwares. Despite a lack of imagination in naming the title, it sets our expectations in a precise way. We expect that we will take on the persona of the great detective.
Excerpt: Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper Genre: Adventure Developer: Frogwares Publisher: The Adventure Company Release Date: 05/26/09 Okay, so, uh, I like Batman plenty, and I think he’s a fantastic character, but I don’t care if DC copyrighted the nickname for him or not, he’s not the World’s Greatest...
Excerpt: M ario and the Princess, Tidus and Yuna and Link and Zelda are some of video games’ greatest couples. Independent developers Frogwares are now adding one more couple to the mix, behold Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson... wait what? Yes Holmes and Watson, stars of Sherlock Holmes vs.
Excerpt: Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper is the sixth Sherlock Holmes adventure from the Frogwares Game Development Studio, which in recent years has also brought us Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened (2007) and Sherlock Holmes: Nemesis (2008).
Excerpt: The previous Sherlock outing from Frogwares saw the good Mr. Holmes lock wits with a fellow literary creation from across the channel. A debonair gentleman thief couldn’t be more different than the protagonist in this, the fifth Sherlock Holmes adventure from this development house.
Conclusion: To Frogwares’ credit, their version of the killer’s identity does seem plausible, and omits the sort of wild fantasy found in other Ripper-themed fiction. Still, this game is a case of one step forward, two steps back for the series.
Summary: Sherlock Holmes is back with probably the series' most terrifying investigation. The player will launch into the hunt for the most dangerous serial killer in England’s history: Jack the Ripper.
Conclusion: Your enjoyment of Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper likely depends on how much you appreciate story over substance. Anyone who has read about the serial killer's gruesome crimes will find it just about impossible to put down the retelling of this dark era of London's history.
Pros: Closely follows the real crimes of Jack the Ripper, Well-told story, Detailed investigative procedures immerse you in murder scenes, First-rate script and voice acting.
Cons: Gets bogged down in too many mundane quests, A few bugs.
