Sherlock Holmes: Nemesis (Sherlock Holmes vs Arsène Lupin) by inferno

GameBoomers
1 March 2010
  • Excerpt: “I play the game for the game's own sake.”* Frogwares Game Development Studio has been specializing in the delightful Sherlock Holmes series since 2002, starting with their first offering, The Mystery of the Mummy . Though interesting for a first adventure, The Mystery of the Mummy did leave much room for improvement. Time has passed and the series has developed throughout the years, with improvements made to graphics, sound, puzzles and storylines.

  • Excerpt: Sherlock Holmes: Nemesis is the fourth Sherlock Holmes adventure from Frogwares, an international developer with studios in Ireland and the Ukraine. Nemesis uses the exact same engine as Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened (released last year), but its tone is far different. Whereas The Awakened was a little on the dark and morbid side, with an emphasis on murders, sacrifices and cults, Nemesis is more of an intellectual exercise.

  • Summary: Cat-and-mouse just got epic.
  • Pros: Puzzles are challenging and make sense; environments have beautiful decor and reflect their real-world companions; controls are a cinch.
  • Cons: Character design, including voice-acting and visual representation, is clunky in some places; first-person view requires player to spend more time scanning with the cursor than in most point-and-click adventure games; game requires the player to explore every little detail before they can progress.

  • Conclusion: Essentially, then, everything is in place for one of the best mystery adventures in years. It’s a traditional, puzzle-packed adventure with a modern graphical twist that manages to do justice to one of the most revered literary protagonists of all time. So if you enjoy a tough challenge with plenty of riddles, clues, and a tight, tongue-in-cheek plot, this game will prove a worthy investment for many hours of -- yes, I will say it: fun.

  • Excerpt: The idea of pairing the sophisticated gentleman thief Arsène Lupin and the disturbingly intelligent detective Sherlock Holmes is not a new one; I read Maurice Leblanc himself wrote three stories where the two met, prompting the equivalent of a copyright lawsuit from Arthur Conan Doyle.
