The Gamers Temple
9 November 2010
  • Excerpt: As The Penal Zone opens, our heroes Sam and Max are trapped in a cage on the bridge of a starship bombarding their city.  At the ship's control is the gorilla-like alien General Skunkape (pronounced Skun-ka-pay), who cackles with glee as each salvo is released, while his bride Stinky sits nearby trying to alleviate her boredom with an impromptu manicure.  Can Max use his psychic powers to save the day?  Wait a minute ... what?

Sam & Max The Devil's Playhouse The City That Dares Not Sleep

Game Revolution
15 September 2010
  • Excerpt: Just look at that giant... bunny... chuthlu running around! I might have spoken too soon... Episode 5 is this season's funniest chapter and a great closer. We get suspense, hilarious gags, and great returning characters. At the end of the previous episode, Max was turned into a huge monster and began tearing New York apart. Meanwhile, Sam was trying to put a rescue team together in order to save his now not-so-little buddy.
  • Pros: Great closing to the season, Returning characters galore!, Funny as hell!

Sam & Max The Devil's Playhouse: Beyond the Alley of Dolls by Becky

GameBoomers
8 September 2010
  • Excerpt: The fourth episode in the Sam & Max The Devil's Playhouse series opens immediately after the cliffhanger ending in the previous episode: Who Stole Max's Brain? The plot and the game's wacky cast of characters have been through historical reinventions and smoke-and-mirror deceptions. But at this stage in the season, the subplot details are coalescing and previously well kept secrets are being revealed.

Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse: The Penal Zone by Becky

GameBoomers
8 September 2010
  • Excerpt: Sam & Max: The Penal Zone opens with Sam, Max, Stinky (green haired female version), and Harry Moleman right in the thick of things. The male characters are held prisoner on the spaceship of General Skun-ka'pe, a world-conquering gorilla. Stinky sits on a throne-like chair. It's unclear if she's a prisoner or a friend of the gorilla. It's not even clear that she's aware of what's going on.
