  • Excerpt: Risen 2: Dark Waters is a disappointment. Trust me, you have no idea how hard it is to type that sentence. You see, since I first discovered Gothic some ten years ago, I’ve been enthralled by everything developer Piranha Bytes makes. They are masters of immersion, building the most alluring and elaborate open world environments that gaming has ever seen (making Skyrim look like amateur hour).

Risen 2: Dark Waters Review

411mania.com
11 May 2012
  • Excerpt: Risen 2: Dark Waters is the sequel to 2009's Risen, a series that was started due to a rights issue with the developer Piranha Bytes original series, Gothic. Another studio took over the development of Gothic 4 so Piranha Bytes worked on Risen. While the Gothic series is well-known for it's punishing gameplay and hardcore nature, the original Risen was sited as a fairly decent RPG with some broken gameplay but fundamentally good.

  • Conclusion: The odd thing is that Risen 2 is not a bad little pirate adventure. Even with all its peculiarities, I have to be honest, I did have fun along the way. Plenty of fun. The quest structure is solid and rarely feels repetitive or bored. At this point, I should say that even with all these drawbacks, I felt compelled to play on. Maybe it's because I always enjoyed Gothic games and because I really enjoyed the original Risen.
  • Pros: You get your own pirate ship (I like that), I enjoyed the treasure hunts, the quests, improving the character and exploring the islands, a lot of that is packed into a nice little pirate adventure, visuals are satisfactory;
  • Cons: Combat can still be as confusing and frustrating as in previous games, buggish, ultimately not much of a story, poor voice acting.

Risen 2: Dark Waters Review

GameSpot
3 May 2012
  • Summary: Evocative tropical atmosphere and gleeful adventuring help Risen 2 navigate the turbulent waters of its problematic combat and scattered glitches.
  • Pros: Array of quests that make you feel like a true adventurer, Voodoo and dirty tricks spice up battles, Great island atmosphere, Fun attitude that doesn't rely on tired pirate cliches
  • Cons: Frustrating combat scenarios, Some annoying bugs, Not as free-form as the original Risen

Risen 2: Dark Waters Review

AtomicGamer
23 April 2012
  • Excerpt: Serious pirate-themed games only come once every few years or so. Sometimes the gimmicks the theme brings are welcome additions, and other times games feel bogged down with half-baked swashbuckling gags and silliness. Luckily, Risen 2: Dark Waters is one of the former, but it seems that Piranha Bytes refuses to learn their lesson about making games accessible, so you can expect your first few hours with the game to be quite frustrating as you learn (or re-learn) the...

Risen 2: Dark Waters (PC) Review

canadianonlinegamers.com
19 May 2012
  • Excerpt: Although I enjoy many genres, RPGs are often my poison of choice.  Remarkably, I actually learned how to read as a youngster thanks to Final Fantasy on NES. As such, I sometimes yearn for the days of yore; when players had to search far and wide for their objectives, and random monsters would wipe out the hero without a second thought. Earlier this year, I had a chance to preview Risen 2. At the time, I praised the game nearly universally.
