Conclusion: Risen 2: Dark Waters valiantly steps up to the plate to offer players something a little more refreshing for jaded palates – an honest-to-goodness open-world pirate RPG – and unfortunately squanders what potential it could have had.
Excerpt: Why aren't there more RPGs about pirates? This is a serious question. Where the heck are they? Apart from the JRPG obsession with all things sky piratey, and the occasional free to play MMO, pirates are relegated to being either miscellaneous enemies or perhaps a class role in a fantasy dungeon crawler. What gives?
Conclusion: There are players who will certainly love Risen 2 – Dark Waters, but I suspect that, even if everyone who gets this game manages to complete it and only then express an opinion, there will always be more gamers who might be disappointed and a little angry with the Piranha Games experience.
Excerpt: Risen 2 , despite its attempt to bring the pirate world to gamers, is a game that has a lot of potential on paper. However, its boring and unfulfilling combat combined with a poor leveling system leaves you wondering whether the game is even worth it. Fortunately, the entire experience isn't hampered thanks to its wondrous atmosphere, which helps to drive you through the dozens of hours the game offers.
Excerpt: In the middle of the night on a lush, tropical island, I lead my gang toward the beach. A lone Inquisition supply ship is docked in the harbor, with only a handful of guards on the night watch. I order my group to storm the beach, proudly declaring the vessel as ours. We rush up the dock, swords drawn, and board the ship. Metal clangs now fill the once-quiet night, as the Inquisition guards block our sword strikes with their own.
Conclusion: There’s a great game in here, and people who buy Risen 2 will probably be quite content with their purchase if they can get past the infuriating first few hours (and that sugar quest in the giant termite cave, shudder). Sadly it’s dug itself a hole with a few terrible design decisions and the good things about the game can’t dig Risen 2 out of it. Not even with a big red ‘X’ on top of that hole. Dodge button and ship combat next time, please?
Conclusion: Concept: Powered by alcohol and snark, round up a pirate crew to help save the world from rampaging elder gods
Graphics: The hand-crafted environments are lush and detailed, but character models and animations range from excellent to awful
Sound: Much of the voice acting is top notch, but battle effects lack punch.
Pros: Diepgaande RPG…, Goed uitgewerkt piratenthema
Cons: …die veel te traag op gang komt, Grafisch ondermaats, Frustrerend vechtsysteem
