Rise of Venice (PC)

  • Excerpt: While Rise of Venice considers itself a strategy game, it's more of a 3D trading simulator. The single-player campaign has a story mode that will show you the ropes and is required to unlock the multiplayer component.  Sadly there is nobody online to play against.  Thankfully the single-player campaign offers hours of entertainment and even more so with the various DLC packs available.
  • Pros: Beautiful graphics; non-linear gameplay; variety in missions and natural disasters
  • Cons: Nobody online to play against; high learning curve

Rise of Venice Review (PC)

Softpedia
10 October 2013
  • Excerpt: The game takes players to Venice at the time of Renaissance and puts their trading skills to test. You are given the opportunity to progress through the ranks of the ruthless Venetian society and become the most powerful and wealthy family. Unlike the previous title mentioned earlier, Rise of Venice offers a solid and satisfying tutorial, which thoroughly explains the most important aspects of the game.
  • Pros: - Gorgeous graphics, - Addition of political layer (Council) and family tree, - Good enough tutorial greatly shortens learning curve
  • Cons: - Shallow Council gameplay mechanics, - Some music doesn't match Renaissance theme, - Few gameplay bugs, - City missions could be more varied

Expert Review

GameSpot
10 October 2013
  • Summary: Whether I'm lining up on Black Friday or I'm scrounging through the stalls at a flea market, I have no problem putting in the hard work needed to get a good deal. But Rise of Venice pushed me a little farther than I would have liked. While this trading simulation about life as a 15th-century Venetian trader has loads of appeal when exploiting the base need that we all have to shop smartly, it is much more demanding than hanging out in a shopping center parking lot all...
  • Pros: Hunting for good deals syncs up with the bargain shopper gene in all of us, Busy cities and authentic rolling seas present a pleasant Mediterranean backdrop, Intriguing intrigue with your Venetian rivals, Atmospheric sound effects and a lonely yet majestic soundtrack
  • Cons: Initial learning curve is pretty steep when setting up automated trade routes, Chaotic manual combat is a whole lot like herding cats

Rise of Venice

Strategy Informer

  • Conclusion: So Rise of Venice then. It’s definitely a step in the right direction for the series as a whole, but I can’t help but feel Gaming Minds have held out on us a little bit. . It’s a shame really as this game was supposed to take the best bits of Port Royale 3 and Patrician IV and clearly raise the bar.
