Real War: Rogue States

The Armchair Empire

  • Conclusion: the US military's hardware. You can also play as ILA forces and have access to a different set of military weapons. For both the good guys and the bad guys, this includes regular and elite troops, land armour, aircraft, amphibious units, sea units, missiles, and remote gun turrets. All of these units are based on a real life counterpart and from my limited knowledge of the military, they seemed to be fairly accurate.

  • Summary: Real War: Rogue States is the follow-up to a pretty bad real-time strategy game. But since there was room for improvement, developer Rival Interactive had a perfect opportunity to go back and address some of the original game's shortcomings, though apparently, the developer didn't take care of all of them. Although Rogue States does fix several of Real War's problems, the original game's biggest problems remain.

Real War: Rogue States

  • Excerpt: The last few weeks I was ITCHING for a good modern real time strategy game. While looking for a new game to buy at my local EB I knew that I just HAD to play an RTS next and wanted it to be as modern as possible. And there was Real War: Rogue States. Since I haven't played the original Real War, I jumped on it. How more real and modern than that could you get, thought I judging by the title?

Real War : Rogue States

Gameguru Mania
3 April 2002
  • Excerpt: Real War : Rogue States is the stand-alone sequel/expansion to pretty mediocre real-time strategy game from Rival Interactive and Simon & Schuster (you may have read my review of Real War last year). The plot behind this game continues the plot of Real War. The United States has learned that the Independent Liberation Army (ILA) is being backed by a rogue state.

  • Excerpt: While the majority of video game companies have delayed, cancelled or modified its war games in light of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, others have argued that players in fact want to play games of this nature, to take matters into their own hands, so to speak. After all, war is what’s on everyone’s minds and mouths.

  • Summary: Real War is a throwback to the days of those horrible real-time strategy clones that followed the success of Westwood's Command & Conquer series. Like most of the games that tried to ride Westwood's coattails, this is an example of amateurish game design at its worst. And considering its subject matter--the US military going abroad to battle terrorists--it's also an example of colossally bad timing. Real War is entirely conventional in many ways.
