Excerpt: A quick tour around PlanetSide 2 will reveal that much has changed on the war torn precipices of Auraxis, but for all its chaos and splendor, it’s the franchise’s surprising transition into a free to play model that stands out most of all. Charting a vision of the future filled with marines, machine guns, and micro transactions, it competitively engages a burgeoning market with a bold new plan of battle, but just how much of the series’ distinguished service record holds...
Excerpt: Planetside 2, SOE’s hulking, free-to-play MMOFPS, is the kind of game that friends conjure up when they get together and let their imaginations run wild. “Wouldn’t it be cool,” someone might say, “if there was a sci-fi shooter--and you fought over territory, and it was always persistent? You’d go to sleep, and wake up, and all your bases would be captured! And you’d have to fight and reclaim them!” Then you would say, “Yeah... and there would be tons of players!
Pros: Three massive, beautiful and persistent continents, Epic scale combat on land and in air, A gluttony of blood-pumping, jaw-dropping moments
Cons: A brutal and confusing new player experience, Occasional crashes and framerate issues, Finding out that base you just recaptured has been lost AGAIN
Excerpt: Planetside 2 is unlike nearly any other first person shooter you've ever played; the only game it's similar to... is the first Planetside . It's a massive multiplayer online shooter that divides players into three competing factions and sets them loose by the thousands onto large continents with a wide range of weapons, vehicles, aircraft, and other equipment.
Conclusion: I was impressed almost immediately upon starting Planetside 2, as my character entered into a 1000-meter freefall and then landed directly in the middle of a huge firefight. Dozens of soldiers crowded the battlefield, jostling for cover while attempting to take down enemies trying to do the same.
Pros: Free!, Fast-paced, huge scope, epic fights are nonstop, Very pretty
Cons: A bit much for new players, Vehicles could use a bit of a nerf
Excerpt: With the Free to play revolution starting up over this past year, Sony Online Entertainment jumps on the bandwagon with Planetside 2 . The original Planetside was released by SOE in 2003 and received a lot of praise for the large scale battles. It certainly had some rough edges, but when it comes to FPS multiplayer of that scale, there simply isn’t another choice.
Pros: - Huge battles like you've never seen before.
Conclusion: Spectacular is a lofty word, but it's the one that best describes the epic battles and ferocious skirmishes that take place on the futuristic battlefields of Planetside 2 . Three massive armies duke it out over three huge maps in a persistent, ever-evolving field of conflict in this PC-only online first-person shooter from Sony Online Entertainment. However, despite its magnificence, Planetside 2 is not without its problems.
Pros: + Epic Scale + Massive battles + Huge range of customisation options + Enormous maps + Free-to-play well implemented + Impressive visuals
Cons: - Could be more accessible - Can feel a little empty from time to time - Impressive visuals will require a beast of a PC
Conclusion: There really is no excuse not to try Planetside 2, especially as the only cost is your gaming time. Be warned though, this is a very addictive game, and it could spoil your previous favourite shooter with its incredible sense of scale. It’s astonishing to see a free to play game deliver such a polished package, that also breaks new technological boundaries.
