Penumbra: Requiem

Auracore MediaWorks
1 December 2008
  • Summary: The final chapter of the Penumbra trilogy doesn't need to be here.
  • Pros: Some unique puzzles.
  • Cons: The engine doesn't fit the game; short content; obtuse puzzles; lack of any story; needless inventory system; feels needless as a whole.

Penumbra: Requiem

Adventure Classic Gaming
19 October 2008
  • Excerpt: Officially released as an expansion rather than a sequel, the road taken by Frictional Games in developing Penumbra: Requiem had not been as easy as it might be initially assumed. The original game in the series, Penumbra: Overture, was actually created as a tech demo by the indie developer for a Swedish game development competition. Later, it was revamped and released commercially as the first part (Episode 1) of a planned episodic trilogy.

Expert Review

Adventure Gamers
30 September 2008
  • Conclusion: This isn’t a long review because there simply isn’t much to say about Penumbra: Requiem – some abstract machinery puzzles in a slightly scary environment with an underwhelming bit of story, and that’s about it for a title that’s too little like its own predecessor and too derivative of another, better game for its own good. If you’re new to Penumbra, look to Black Plague before even considering this expansion, since you’ll need both in any case.
